Retro East™ Summer Session, Liquid Lou's 4/20

How do you beat a guy who has a track in his backyard? Full-scale modified racer Liquid Lou Cicconi's raceway is in his old workshop for his full-sized cars which is located right next to his house. Damn, the guy can get up in the morning, walk ten feet and practice while still wearing his pajamas and eating breakfast. Basically Lou is pretty damn awesome on his home track. After the spanking he gave everyone on Sunday, he should change the sign over the door to Liquid Lou's House of Pain.
Lou's beautiful super-fast track, high traction, and a killer kink in the back straight. The track is much harder than it looks because of the broad sweeping turns. You have to dive really deep or you just are scrubbing off too much speed upon exit. Personally I just have a hard time here, not enough confidence to drive as deep as required for more than a couple of laps, nothing more practice will not help.
Liquid Lou's was the kick-off race for the Retro East™ summer session featuring the IRRA rules package with the sole exception of the East Coast race format, which is basically like that used for D3, qualifying, seven in each main with one move-up for the winner to the next main. We tweak it depending on entries of course.
Seventeen entries showed up to do Can-Am battle, with a couple of new faces which is always good. The traveling circus of retro racers knew we faced a hard challenge at Lou's because of the nature of the track and the strong base of home track heros that run just at this track and run it well they do.
The star-studded field from the bottom.
The field from the top.
Noose techs Rob Kurylo's car while John "Jersey John" Molnar looks on. To speed up tech we have adopted first to tech (and pass) is the last to qualify. This worked well as the faster guys teched in early and they were able to spend more time helping the guys new to the retro experience get their cars through tech. Not surprisingly Lou built most of those. Lou, you have to use some kind of tool to measure things. I have an extra R-Geo tech tool I will have to chain to your pit box.
Liquid Lou showing how many times he failed tech before he finally got through. At one point the only legal thing on his car was the rear tires. LOL...
Noose gave everyone a break and has decided he will judge concours for awhile instead of entering. The winners were (L-R) 2nd Randy Kohr's Red Fox McLaren, 1st Rob Kurylo's Eddie Mac-painted O/S McLeagle, and my 3rd place rattle can O/S Ti22.
Here is another shot of Rob's winning entry.
Noose had this beautiful Blue Moon Beer sponsored O/S Ti22 that would have been his entry if he did not decide to have mercy on everyone for awhile and not enter.

Rob Kurylo had TQ until Lou stepped up and cut him with a blazing 5.289, destroying Jay Kisling's old record of 5.483!
A Main
Lou Cicconi, 5.289 secs NEW TRACK RECORD!
Rob Kurylo, 5.362
Ray Carlisi, 5.362
Mike Katz, 5.470
Randy Kohr, 5.488
Matt Bruce, 5.501
Tom Miller, 5.524
B Main
tonyp, 5.571 secs
Andrew Eldridge, 5.584
Noose, 5.607
Matt Remick, 5.611
C Main
Robert Geibel, 5.671 secs
Mike Isles, 5.815
Ed Lord, 5.839
Paul Tresca, 5.857
Chris Andretta, 5.701
John Molnar, 6.225
The C Main winners. L-R: Ed Lord 2nd, Mike Iles 1st, Robert Geibel 3rd. They along with the 4th place man got to move-up to the B Main. A couple of wall blasts, a bent motor can, and a broken axle kept the race from being close. Mike avoided most of the carnage for a 1st place win.
1) Mike Iles, 230 laps
2) Ed Lord, 210
3) Robert Geibel, 200
4) Paul Tresca, 194
5) Chris Andretta, 191
6) John Molnar, 178
Mike used this borrowed Matt Bruce car to win the C Main. Matt let me try this car in the morning and it was pretty damn good. Not a bad first chassis, and my personal choice of the "Coolest chassis of the race". Details on it later on. Mike used a Ferrari body, 7/29 gears, Red Fox guide, Pro Slot motor, and JK tires all around. 109 grams. Controller by Difalco.
Ed Lord's second place car. One of those Cicconi machines. Chassis is a Pirro. McLeagle body, 7/29 gears, Red Fox guide, and JK tires all around. 100 grams.
Robert Geibel's third place car. Chassis is a Lou Cicconi-built Warmack. McLeagle body, 7/29 gears, Red Fox guide, and JK tires all around. Ruddock controller.
I took the B Main (after a horrible qualifying run) after a battle with first Noose then Andrew Eldridge. With one move-up to the A Main I just tried to stay on since I still cannot get the rhythm of this track down where I can run fast for more than a couple of laps. Noose was third after having terrible traffic problems. Andrew was unavailable at picture taking time.
1) tonyp, 243 laps
2) Andrew Eldridge, 237
3) Noose, 233
4) Robert Geibel, 218
5) Mike Iles, 217
6) Matt Remick, 129
7) Paul Tresca, 88
8) Ed Lord, 58
I ran the same chassis I had since the first race of the year. It was really fast last week in practice but I just could not make it or my driving magic today.
O/S Ti22 body, 7/29 gears, Red Fox Guide, Alpha treated rear tires, and Chicagoland fronts. Pro Slot motor. Controller by Difalco. 117 grams.
Noose was third with his Blue Moon-bodied car (I forgot to get a picture of the chassis), but it is pretty much identical to mine above, Noose used 7/28 gearing, Red Fox guide, JK tires all around, a Pro Slot motor, and Difalco controller. 121 grams.
Now on to the A MAIN!

I already figured out you problem at Lou's... It's the same style hat you wore in previous races... EXCEPT FOR THE COLOR!!! You can't change anything in the middle of a winning streak.

John "Jersey John" Molnar getting ready to belly marshall the A Main.
L-R, Ray Carlisi now back racing and as fast as ever. He managed to avoid John's stomach and finished 2nd, Lou Cicconi, TQ and 1st place both with new track records. Mike Katz was once again third.
The A Main started out with Mike Katz leading heats 1-3, Ray was in the lead at the halfway mark. In heat 5 Lou took over the lead never to be challenged again, winning with a new lap total and also turning the fastest lap on each of the eight lanes, finally winding up with a time of 5.222, faster than he qualified. Ray ran second for the rest of the race with Mike Katz holding on to third. The race was really close with the top three runners on the same lap for the first four heats.
A great win by Lou, he simply blew everyone away at the end.
1) Lou Cicconi, 254 laps
2) Ray Carlisi, 249
3) Mike Katz, 247
4) Randy Kohr, 244
5) Tom Miller, 243
6) Rob Kurylo, 241
7) tonyp, 240
8) Matt Bruce, 87
Lou built his own chassis to a blueprint he got from Ernie Mossetti. It really worked on this track and of course Lou drives the track pretty well. LOL. O/S Lola body, 7/29 gearing, Red Fox guide, JK front and rear tires. 101 grams. Controller by Third Eye. Lou, great job! This was the second straight retro win for Lou on this track. He also calls a pretty good race, too!
Ray Carlisi ran this loaner car that has been hanging out in my box since December. All we did was put on some fresh tires. McLeagle body, 8/29 gearing, Red Fox guide, JK rears, Chicagoland fronts, 117 grams. Difalco controller.
Mike Katz was once again third this time with this Katz-Mack chassis. 7/28 gearing, Slick 7 guide, JK tires front and rear, 113.4 grams. Controller by Cidex.

Actually I was dying from allergies all day Saturday so I took two allergy pills instead of one and I was zonked out all day. I could barely keep my eyes open. That and I cannot drive the track. LOL...

Rob Kurylo was second fastest qualifier with this car. It's one of my chassis, with a McLeagle body, 7/28 gears, Red Fox guide, and JK front and rear tires. 109 grams and Rob used a JayGee controller modified by Heather.
Randy Kohr was fourth with this Warmack chassis he constructed. Red Fox McLaren body and guide. JK rear tires and Randy made his fronts out of a pair of Koford rears. 107 grams.
Ray Carlsi catching up with Randy Kohr on what he missed in the months he was away going to high school wrestling meets with his son.
Tom Miller was very fast in the A Main. Tom is one of the super-fast locals at Liquid Lou's.
In case you don't know who Noose is.
Matt Bruce built this chassis using a little bit of everything. It runs really well. Motor mount is an old Ferrett unit he modified. The pans are like my aero car where the outer pans do not move with the body.
Matt said after the race he was going to take it home and get it all shined up for the next race. Beautiful job!
It was a great one as usual. The IRRA rules worked out just fine with no problems at all. Everyone opted to run the Pro Slots which had been the required motor up to this race, so basically nothing has changed.
I wish to personally thank Lou for the hospitality and for a wonderful track to run on.
That is all I remember. See you next month at Dom's for F1s!

It took me 2-1/2 hours to get home. The Turnpike was dead stopped from exit 6. I finally had to get off and go home via Dom's...

I too want to thank Lou for hosting a great event and being such a help to a lot of people.
And Lou...you finally passed tech when you uttered those magic words: I GET IT!

As for the motors, I came very, very close to running my own-built chassis that I had a TSR D3 motor in that flew on this track. I practiced the most with the car but elected to go with the car I ran because it was a wee bit more stable. In practice, mine with the D3 motor was right there with the guys (well except Lou... NO ONE could catch him!!!).
If Dennis Samson is reading this, Tony did a good job of impersonating you at the tech booth! We got things done very quickly.

Good to see Lou have a kids race as well so they could enjoy the fun.
Let's take Lou up on his offer for another race on his track again soon. An enduro would be fun on that track.

Your "Rent Me" ride was awesome, thanks again. Howie's name on the McLeagle was good luck for me. With an 8t pinion no less, pulling 116 grams of magnatraction. Was it really an 8t?
That entire setup will be perfect at the John Gorski Sr. Memorial Race at Elmsford. Hope I can run it there too
See you at the next one at Dom's.

As always, a great report and thanks for meeting my picture minimum of two per race report.
Lou, great hospitality. Your track is sick, dude. It definitely challenged me and thanks for the soldering, dude. It never ceases to amaze me the generosity of time the East Coast pros give to us thrashers.
Joe and Mike, thanks for the great pit work. You guys kept me in the race.
Yoda, it was an honor to pit for you!!!
