During my recent trip to Europe I was down in Barcelona where I planned to visit this famous slot car shop that's been in existence 30+ years I was told. The store is located in an industrial building in the city of Igualada. I was met there by local racer Xavi Tomas who would be my host. The business forms the hub of a vibrant slot car market with 6 clubs/raceways within a 30 Kilometer radius. The shop not only carries a very large stock but also has 4 tracks in two floors, produces their own line of a lot cars (Top-Slot) and acts as distributed for many others.

Downstairs is their 6-lane routed wood track where they hold both 1/24 and 1/32 scale races.

This all before you step into the retail portion of the operation.

But before we enter the retail portion there are also some tracks upstairs including a large Carrera that's used for rentals.

What looks like a floppy disk drive on the left of the driver panel actually accepts a pre-paid card to pay for the drivers rental time.

Really, if you notice they carry some ProSlot parts as well as a selection of flexi frames for a Production16 class they run. They also run 1/24 Scaleauto, 1/32 Slot.it Group C and LMP which uses the composite metal chassis with plastic, resin or GFK bodies. A newer Klasse they run is chalked Klasse 1, for 1/24 hard body F1 cars that use Scaleauto or Niemas composite frames. This is the one I am building with the Jordan Buzzin' Hornet body.

The trip is done and I'm back in California but I continue to communicate with some of the contacts that I've made as I discover more of the slot car world beyond the United States an England. Basically outside the birthplace of slot cars. Definitely an argument could be said that Italy and Spain, especially around Barcelona is the center of the slot car universe because of the popularity of 1/32 Slot.it Group C and 1/24 Scaleauto GT. I see this plus LMP and Production16 as being very popular classes.

Since I had limited space to carry slot cars back to the US I decided instead to purchase only parts so that I could reproduce some of the cars I saw being raced here, especially the 1/24 hard bodies with metal chassis. I've stayed away from the LMP class cars though if I make a future trip to Germany that will be at the top of my list.

Great coverage Dennis.

As the unofficial European Ambassador, will you locate the American Embassy in Barcelona?

I'm waiting a few months for the next president. ;-) The problem is most of my overseas travel is to Asia and outside of Japan nothing is happening over there ... yet. I do have an ache to go and visit with Fola, Frank and the German guys. Might even stop by the "Stupid Fast Racers" in Bruhl, who knows.

If you can get Kim Jong Un to race slot cars it could change world history.

I'm really surprised there isn't a big slots following in China. Maybe it's too low tech?
