MVH "END of the NERR SEASON & SUMMER IS HERE!" RETRO RACE - June 10, 2017

MVH kicked off the summer of 2017 with a weekend of retro racing.  Race No. 1 saw Retro Coupes take on the 155 foot Gerding G7 King while the second race was supposed to pit IRRA Can-Am cars against the American “Purple Mile” Sovereign, though that was revised due to the light turnout.

First up was the Retro Coupe race with a field of 8 necessitating running in the 4/4 format.  Even though the field was small for a weekend race there was still some great racing for those that did show up.

Peter Lentros posted the fastest lap of the race but he was in a heated battle with second fastest racer Bob Blanchette and almost-as-fast Richard Payne for the final two steps on the podium.  While all this was going on in his review mirrors, Ray Lee was cruising to a three-lap win. At the checkered flag Richard held on to claim 2nd place by a two track-section margin while Peter nosed out Bob as they both finished on the same track-section separated by about a foot.  Six laps back Rolly Lapierre, Jr. led the rest of the comparatively spread out field, followed by Dan Savage, Dick Griffin and John Sutherland.

Coupe finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane:

     1)    Ray Lee                  305/7     4.558   YL

     2)    Richard Payne       302/11   4.557   PU

     3)    Peter Lentros          302/9     4.499   BL

     4)    Bob Blanchette       302/9     4.500   GN

     5)    Rolly Lapierre, Jr.   296/2     4.609   PU

     6)    Dan Savage           292/13   4.551   GN

     7)    Dick Griffin              280/1     4.890   BL

     8)    John Sutherland     277/17   4.718   GN

After a break for lunch, racing continued with the running of the Can-Am class. Though scheduled to be run on the “Purple Mile”, it was decided to relocate the race to the King to allow adequate marshals. Racing was again in the 4/4 format.

Though not quite as close as the Coupe race, the races for 2nd and 4th places were tight enough to be interesting as once again Ray Lee cruised to the win with a comfortable margin.  Nick Ball posted the fastest lap of the race but was in a duel with Peter Lentros for the 2nd finishing position and eventually had to settle for 3rd as Peter bested him by one lap.  A couple of laps back Rolly Lapierre, Jr. and Richard Payne were in a similar battle that saw Rolly prevail by slightly less than a lap to claim 4th.

Third fastest racer Bob Blanchette finished in 6th followed by Dan Savage, John Sutherland and Dick Griffin. A recent returnee to slot racing, John was pleased to improve his finishing position from the Coupe race.

Can-Am finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane:

     1)    Ray Lee                  313/12   4.398   OR

     2)    Peter Lentros          309/2     4.500   BL

     3)    Nick Ball                 308/3     4.386   PU

     5)    Richard Payne       305/8     4.550   YL

     6)    Bob Blanchette       299/1     4.449   WT

     7)    Dan Savage           292/2     4.609   GN

     8)    John Sutherland     289/7     4.660   GN
