The Stock Car Chassis Champion Never Made
The 4-½” in-line brass rail Stock Car Chassis was available starting with part #285 in 1967.
This creation was built as a one-off roduction prototype or a “What If” build to try and run with the anglewinder cars. When the AW chassis with floppy pans took over the rapidly changing slot car world the in-line cars were left behind.
What I built here is a late 1968 #286 chassis with an upgrade to floppy pans using an early 1969 Champion kit #293-2. These are the same pans that became the standard for Champion “RTR Group Cars” into the stamped center 1970s NCC period.
I did the wire pan hinge different than the instructions or production cars... one long 'L' that keeps the front of the pan from bending after the first wall shot.
Could it compete with the AW cars? No, or highly doubtful.
Is it a missing link? - Maybe
Is it cool as hell? - Damn, I think so.
Would a 617 make it rock...or roll? ... A 517 fits in a hypoid configuration.
Should it be built up with 3/32" modern rolling stock 'n BBs? Maybe.
And there it is!
