I know several of you have been waiting for word about whether or not at the R4/11 we would again be using hand-outs in Can-Am. Sorry for the delay but there were several different things that we had to consider before making that announcement.

Although not carved in stone, the R4/10 was intended to be the last R4. Because we are more than just a slot car raceway and our regular hobby business was growing so much the long hours of preparation and se-tup, let alone the 18 hour days during the event, were starting to become more than we could handle.

But… there is nothing more I would like to do than race slot cars. Nothing we do here is as much fun as slot racing. If it was possible that is all we would do. Plus we really enjoy the camaraderie and fun when all you racers come to visit. Yes… we would miss all of you!!

So, the R4/11 will be held March 16-18, 2018.

Now about hand-outs. The Can-Am hand-outs worked out very well at the R/10. Of course, you can never please everyone but even most of the “haters” ended up liking the idea and several have asked me to continue hand-outs. Considering the amount of organization needed to do something like this, while keeping things as even as possible, the hand-outs went extremely smooth. I know many were surprised by how smooth things went. But it took a TON of work.

Was it worth doing? Yes! Did it accomplish what I wanted it to? Yes. The top racers didn’t change but the racing was closer top-to-bottom. But the fact that it did take more work and that most of the non-7R bullet motors are gone by now, we are not going to do hand-outs in Can-Am.

Bring any IRRA® legal motor to race in Can-Am and F1. GT Coupe will remain with handout 7Rs.

See you in March.

I guess I better start thinking about a poster/shirt design then.

I might have to do this trip one more time. I had a great time last year and I learned a lot about car handling on tracks with more glue than I am used to here in Florida.

Also, I thought last year's race was very, very well run by Mike and crew.

That means I'll probably be in attendance as well.

Never forget that first place goes to the racer with the MOST laps, not the racer with the FASTEST lap

Are you still having the "Senior Class"?

Following your logic on hand-outs, why bother with them in Coupe?

GTC is hand-out at most (all?) of the Premier events.

Mike gave many reasons why hand-outs worked so well last year. And the only consistent reason i can see for not doing it was the amount of work. geez!

The most fun thing about last year's race was the hand-out motors and the entire group breaking them in and the drama. :)

Best slot car race I ever attended and now it's back to being just another time-consuming race.

i would think the reasoning (whatever it is) for hand-outs in GTC would be a good reason for hand-outs in all classes. And last year seemed to justify that reasoning.

Ive been to 2 so far. Must say last year was way better than the first I attended. Now we are back to trying to find motors for 2 classes. And it opens it up to old and newer hawks. Irra board members can say what they wish about the motors. The old ones are faster the new ones lately suck but have breaks. Really helps the newer guys.

My r4 handouts from last year were great and still are. The sano motors this year are all fast from what Ive seen and been told. The ones in the packaging are garbage now.

So will there be extra coupe motors ordered so we can at least get motors out of a decent batch or shall we all now have to go find sano motors or the older r motors or just suck it up and run what we can buy?

Well at least noose will come back to help with tech. So thats a plus

At this point Id have to say Im not interested in going to my 3rd this year.

I was hoping that if the R4/11 was not going to be handout motors in Can-Am, at least it would be limited to the 7R version only, along with F1. There are a few racers with the faster older version which will certainly show up at this race. Limiting the R4/11 to the 7R version only would go along way to level the playing field. Just my opinion.

Would be nice doc. Especially since its the irra flagship motor and all. Would make sense since its the only version that can be ordered these days.

Is it handouts for both Coupe classes or only GTC-FK?

Hey Mike

Are hand-outs still going to be 7Rs or are you guys going with the Professor Motor unit?

Mike indicated to me this morn that the hand-outs will be the Professor Motor motors.

OK now. With all of the various motor announcements and timing of approvals, etc.: Is the short shaft 7R JK motor allowed at the R4? Specifically, in Can-Am and F1. I realize that GT Coupe will be hand-out motors of some kind.

Any legal IRRA® motor, so the short shaft is legal for the R4?

From other IRRA® posts, I have deduced that the short shaft 7R is legal at the R4 in Can-Am and F1.
