Lanes are numbered and the numbers are repeated every 10 feet or so. When a car comes off the driver calls out the lane number and car is re-slotted. In the case of a multi-car pile-up the track power is shut off. The system actually works quite well. I recall only one track call the entire evening. With the sprint format, drivers know that in only 8 laps you can't afford and off and drive accordinglyNo lane color! how dose that work?
