Remember this inline chassis? The seller made some interesting claims. Well another signed chassis showed up, same seller and also claims that it was also made by a NASA engineer. So I ask for more info.
As you can see this angle winder is dated in a similar way to the Stan Smith inline chassis. This chassis was signed by Stan Swindon the IV and dated 5-16-9 and then a modified with a fixed forward pan, which was dated.2-14-70
I like the history and I like names and dates, any thoughts?
Got this response after I ask ( see below) for any additional info.

Hi Martin,
Glad this car is going to a good home.
Please view my sold history under NASA listings photos patches etc as I have been selling off all of this material and nasa related items photos etc for quite a while now including another signed car from the estate of Mr Stanley J Smith whom built and signed the car you purchased. Mr Stanley Smith and his wife both worked for NASA the KSC team. Ebay item eBay number
392172796884 is a good example as there is an award and letter to S J Smith for the Apollo 15 program. Some of my other sold listings can also confirm this was an engineer who went and graduated from Georgia Tech got into the USAF and then went on to work for NASA.
Hope this information helps.

Thanks again for your purchase.

Enjoy it

Your previous message

Hi there, I am excited to receive this car, how did you come to know who built this car? is there any way I can verify this info?
Can you supply any or all documentation that proves your claims that it was BUILT BY A FORMER AIR FORCE & SPACE ENGINEER WHO WORKED FOR THE NASA SPACE PROGRAM IN THE 1960'S.
Thanks, I am happy to pay for shipping of any papers, pics or leads that may exist.
Martin.

That's funny Tony, :laugh2:

Trust me I thought the same thing. I am just a sucker for a signature.

It was a Buy it now for $59 and I passed. Then I went back to the seller later and offered $45 he accepted and I justified this way,

Telescoping hubs at rear

Decent looking pro fronts

Nice Champion motor with period wires.

The history and signature was a bonus that I thought maybe fun to share with you all. See anything of interest here?. Thrust bearing on the front axle and a spring thing on the top of the guide pivot.

No disrespect Martin, and I'm glad to see your appreciation for the chassis...but reading Tony's comment actually made me choke on my coffee.  :)

Being an engineer/pilot/ and having soldering abilities like some of you guys is not the same thing.   He might not have been able to build a nice doghouse either!

Funny comment though!

I think you did OK for the price, but isn't that an off set motor box designed for left hand endbell drive?

Which would give it quite a weight bias to the right hand side.

Maybe it made it through the donut better, or maybe it was a mistake, or maybe both?

I concur that it's interesting history and I'm glad you snagged it, Martin.

Tell us more about the spring gizmo on the flag, please :)

".but reading Tony's comment actually made me choke on my coffee."  :) John, I did the same thing. Tony was right on. and funny.

I know someone was asking about the benefits of split pans. So Stan thought it worth while to give it a try (follower of fashion) but what was the theory behind this trend. 69-70?

Paul, I wish I knew more. These are the pics from the add. its not in my possession at this time. Is it a candidate for a makeover? I  respect your opinion. In-fact I respect all your comments.

No re-do.    Just clean it a little and get it in running condition.

I agree with Matt. Even to the point of not getting into cleaning.

Another point to consider with engraved chassis is, learn a lesson from my "Steve's Racers" refurb -

as you solder and re-solder, you have to keep it clean. Clean it enough times and the engraving gets thinner every time.

I never admitted it until now, but I actually had to take the chassis to a trophy shop, digitally scan it, feed the info into an engraver, and have it re-etched. Lesson learned.

To start digging into a chassis like that would be to destroy it, IMO

"The eagle has landed" (only a few more cliche's to go) , Yep it showed up today. I will oil motor and run then  take pics tomorrow. I am not sure what this body is?

Is it the Mclaren M6 GT street car? Rear window is all wrong.

Paul, thanks for passing on the lesson learned. I hope we all feel like this is a safe place to share.

That body may be the long lost Waters Mclaren coupe.

I'm thinking Kirby or Dynamic had a Mclaren coupe too. I might of had one sometime during the 1970-75 timeframe on my weekly Phaze III race car.

Truescale body which I believe was based on the Dynamic handling body.

No pictures of the waters. I remember the cockpit made it look like a flying saucer vs other coupe bodies available. I believe It made it off an artists drawing in like Road & Track instead of the real car.

Took a few more pics. The wire in the front does a nice job of centering the guide

The name looks more like Stan Winder IV

Have not come across this color tire before ( orange tire is for reference)

Compared it to a Dynamic Mclaren M6 GT coupe, defiantly not that. Anybody out there have a pic of the Waters body, Tony mentioned.

The orange tire hubs on the car look like Associated, but I can't recall whether they were flanged or not. I used to turn the flanges off Riggen & Champion hubs when re-rubbering.them. Your old hubs could have been re-rubbered several times.

I think the "Stan winder IV" was Stan Smith's name for his version of the anglewinder chassis. This must have been his 4th build. You can tell the pans were modified quite a bit later than the center section since they have much less patina.

Bill/Allen all that makes sense to me.

Modified with a fixed forward pan, which was dated.2-14-70 engraved on the pan (2nd pic)in the fist post.

The name works too,  The Ss in Stan were different so I thought they were 2 builders, but now you suggest it. Stan Winder 4 does sound more like a name you give to a chassis.

Thanks for you input.

The flag centering device is clever. I may try one some day.

Eliminates depending on lead wires to do the duty.
