Relatively recently, I bought a power supply from Mid-America and I've run into a problem with it (see pic). I tried to find the original post here on Slotblog where the power supplies were advertised for sale but I was unsuccessful at finding the post. The short story is that I can break in a motor just fine but I'm unable to get the power supply to run my tire truer. The tire truer works just fine when hooked up to my Wright Way power supply.

The Rek unit came with a small booklet but it's not real intuitive for a non-electronic guy like myself. There is a warning to not hold the on/off button more than five seconds or else the unit will go into calibration mode; the booklet says a user must never do this! Well, I'm from Texas and I'm sure I did that before ever looking at the booklet. If done, it says to contact them... in China! I'm hoping someone here on Slotblog can walk me through some magic to get me back on path. Help!

Try a different set of leads first. I bought a Gofert and the wires were so poor that my truer wouldn’t run. You could, however, cook your lunch on the wires.

well, I don't have one of these things, but if it went into test mode when you held the button down, did you try the same thing again to get it out of it? if that fails, sometimes

1. shorting the input with a cliplead to let it complete it's test with both pots all the way up and watching the display to see what it's doing, or

2. removing AC power from the unit for a few minutes to reset the internal 5V supply and throw it back into normal mode again.

there may or may not also be a coin cell inside to keep the memory alive, in which case that would have to be pulled as well. (and a warning note put on the front panel, if it were I!)
this is always a problem when when computer control is unnecessarily built into "simple" analog circuits IMO.

(I'm an old power supply designer.)

there are no fuses on the output of Voltage/current regulated supplies. you can turn the current pot to zero and the output will turn off. otherwise it will limit at whatever current you set it to, even into a short. there is however always a fuse on the AC input to protect the unit if something goes wrong internally.

Swap the output wires with something that has more then 3 strands of thin wires.

WOOHOO!!!!

Racer36 and gotboostedvr6 hit the nail on the head! I bought some new leads online(rated at 15 or 20 amps) and the power supply now runs my tire truer!!! now I have a power supply in my bag for taking to the track and I have a power supply at home.... no more swapping it around as needed. Thanks guys!
