This is going to be the heart of the beast. It's a "mystery armature".......but a good looking one:

Big%20O%20Iso%20Pro-%2045.jpg

It sure looks hand wound to me and of a heavy gauge wire. I cut the comm, polished it out and repainted the markings on the windings:

Big%20O%20Iso%20Pro-%2046.jpg

It's in this black wrinkle finish Mura C-can motor:

Big%20O%20Iso%20Pro-%2054.jpg

Featuring Champion White Dot magnets...........

Big%20O%20Iso%20Pro-%2052.jpg

..........Parma Dougherty elephant ear heat sinks and comm cooler............

............Mura solid state buss bars, shunted brushes, Camen brush springs and insulation, and 2-56 stainless steel end bell hardware:

Time to assemble the roller.....

That motor should move the car right along...

Did you keep track of how many hours you have in that beautiful chassis?

That thing looks like it's timed into the danger zone, you may want to crate the cat before firing it up so he doesn't hurt something or you or himself. Probably would need a choke controller, eh? :heat:

You should hear it on the power supply when I give it a quick ZING! Pablo. :D

At least a zillion hours Rob.  That's why I'm so impressed with what Monty did. It's also why I don't even try to do work for others. If I charged the $100 Phil says Monty's chassis would cost today I'd be working for peanuts. I'm old and slow but having fun building.  :dance3:

Wheels and tires are vintage Associated fronts and our reproduction Associated rear wheels with Riggen orange rubber:

Here's a period Associated ad I found. Monty is even mentioned in it:

Back then I clung to the notion of a more scale appearance and ran black rubber. I lost a lot! :laugh2:

When i ran wing cars in the '70s & '80s, I always ran orange rubber. Even my weekly Grp. 12 car used orange rears. I bought a few blue donuts back then, but never tried the other colors.

The armature you used sure looks like my Pooch 24 that I bought out of the counter at Jacks Raceway as Fortner and I were being thrown out after finishing 1&2 at one of my last SoCal USRA races in 1972. Beautiful arm, so much so that me an arm winder bought it just to look at it. Treasure it.

Jesse, I had thought Camen too, until I noticed the orange paint on the tail end of the stack for balancing. This tells me it wasn't balanced by Joel, because he always used purple paint on the comm end to work with the strobe light. This might be an earlier arm wound before Camen bought the original Rocket balancer.

I think it's a beautiful arm too. It can live a long and safe life in this "magazine car" on display. I have other cars for the track:

I clung to the notion of front wheels in Eurosport after they went floppy / nonexistent.  I REALLY lost a lot.

So interesting - I'd have thought that the motor bracket would be gone by 1973.

when I ran my 'scale' series, our front wheels were essentially just stickers inside clear wheelwells.

we tried to eliminate "cheating" by making a lot of things legal so that everyone could compete at high speed.

They were in the Northeast. The first wing car chassis I built in late '70 had a motor bracket, 3/4' fronts, & 7/8" rears. That was the only chassis i built for myself with a motor bracket & those size wheels.

A very slight hi-jack: I noticed in that Associated price sheet, Earl Campbell's name. Anyone know what ever became of him? Been years. Very nice work indeed Rick.

Tom, I too was trying to find guys we raced with (when I could get to LA) and found something about his being a shock absorber distributor in Texas. Earl was a nice guy and always extremely fast guy in his day, got to watch him break 4 seconds on S&S's blue.

Rick, the three Associated bodies I have are Lola, GRD, & Ferrari. I airbrushed the Lola with Parma's, then available, lacquer, but 45 yrs. later, it's never dried hard as you'd expect.

What approximate date would those Associated bodies have been available? I read a lot on this website but I have never seen those bodies or the side dam instructions. Im guessing these date from 1971 (?) something since I had just stopped racing in early 1970. I had no idea this is what the earliest wing cars looked like. I wouldnt be back into a slotcar track again until 1995. That was when I saw my first wing car. It was shocking!!!
