Does anyone make a 1/32 scale Chaparral 1 hardbody for slot cars? Resilient Resin had one but as we know they no longer exist. I haven't been able to find one anywhere on the net.

One of my sister-in-law's was involved in the bonding of that car, in reference to the title.

 

IIRC, there was #002 or #003 in the serial #, and not much else.

 

Also, IIRC, it either belongs, or belonged, to someone in the Walton family.

Local basement racer Don Anderson made some in resin several years ago, along with a Cunninham C-2. I built both, and

they turned out alright with some thinning out of the wall thickness. I don't know if I can find his info. Larry Kelly; do you still

have his contact info?

Proto Slot did a nice body kit....available from Electric Dreams last time I looked.

 

The pros are that it is such a cool looking car but the cons...the front valance cuts back in a reverse direction limiting guide lead and the shallow body means a shallow motor will be needed......just the sort of challenge a builder such as yourself needs.

 

I say go for it.

 

I copied a crappy copy of the shell and could provide one given time.

Patto's Place lists the "63 CHPARRAL 1" in vac form, if that's of any use.

Go to "1/32 Scale SPORTS/GT BODIES", about 1/4 of the page down.

 

Not sure of the quality tho.

 

Some of Bruce's bods are a bit light on detail, but the Chaparral could be OK, seeing as its fairly curvy with little fine detail.

 I just ran a 1/32 scale SCCA Proxy race on my track Saturday night and there was a Chaparral 1 in the field and it looks fantastic on the track. That's why I want one.

I really appreciate the offer, I just hate to have you go to all that much trouble for me. 

 

If you find time to do it and want to do it I'll take one but don't feel obligated to do it if it gets to be a pain in the rear.

Dave,  Don is retired to the Appalacia area with one of his kids.  His 'blog name is 'Silverhelmet' on other sites for homeset cars.  I do not know if he has or saved any molds.

 

Ignore my earlier post, Hawk made a IIA, not a Ia.  I have seen both on the tracks - Meadowdale and Road America over the years.

 

I recall the '1a' was also known as a Troutman-Barnes build, so it may have not been a one off Jim Hall build.

Jeff and Jim, I am always working on resin body kits. My work is part time and the other part is resin casting and trying to stay alive so putting a couple of these kits together is possible.....but not tomorrow.

I will write your wishes into my system and get to it when I can.

Yes, they are connected. When I first saw the car I thought it was a Scarab.

The two were both built by Troutman and Barnes. Some of the confusion comes because Harry Heuer once drove a series I

in Meister Brau colors. The cars were very similar before the more common Devin-ish style came along. The photo is from

American Road Race Specials 1934-70 by Allen Girdler, a superb book if you can find one.

Richard Falconer in his book "Chaparral" confirms that there were five Chaparral 1's built by Troutman & Barnes. Numbers 001 and 003 went to Jim Hall, 002 To Harry Heuer, 004 went to Chuck Jones of Team Meridian racing, and 005 went to Britishman Phil Scragg who competed with it in hillclimbs in England. 005 was the only car that actually had a serial number plate, probably due to customs laws on exports. The Chaparral book is a must for anyone even remotely interested in the Chaparral's or 60's era sports car racing, especially the Can Am series.

Have had the Falconer book for many years and it is a great resource and is good to revisit every year or so.   The book Dave referenced above sounds like a good one, also.    Seems like those old books can be bought reasonable if you watch ebay and Amazon used sellers.  The Offenhauser book by Gordon Elliot White is also a good one.  Loads of pictures and history of open wheel racing in America and the Indy 500.

I talked to my sister-in-law tonight and the firm she worked for (and my wife still does), was involved in issuing lost title bonds, for a Chaparral 1, and a Porsche 906, that someone from the Walton family, had just purchased.
 
I'm not sure what the $ amounts, quoted in the document, I saw, referred to, but they were something like $860K and $640K.(apparently not the purchase price)

 

I'm guessing it was about 5 years ago, so it was most likely this car.

Does the falconer book show any reference pictures of the chaparral 2?......not 2a or subsequent versions but just the 2.

Most real race cars, that were constructed only for racing, were sold on a bill of sale. I bought several that way.
