F-1 on the Royal – 4/30/19

 

Eight of the usual suspects brought their retro Formula-1 cars to run on the American Royal this week. The race was run in 16 heats in the 4-on/4-off format.

 

F-1 Cars in Tech:

 

Ray Lee has been consistently fast since his recent return from Florida and this week he jumped out to an early lead while Peter Lentros and Dan Savage led the chase. By the halfway point Ray had posted a race-leading 168 lap total with Peter four laps off the pace and Dan another lap back at 163. Woody Hazelwood and Richard Payne each had logged 162 laps making it a fairly close four-way race for the remaining two podium spots (assuming Ray would continue to be out front).

 

However, after the move to the inside lanes, things changed dramatically. Peter was having some traction problems and ended up five laps off his first-half pace while Dan put up seven fewer laps after the change-over. Meanwhile, Woody had the best second half effort, adding five laps to his first half total while Richard P followed him past both Peter and Dan. When time ran out, Ray took the win by a comfortable 8-lap margin with Woody solidly in 2^nd place. Richard P claimed the bottom podium step by 2 laps over Peter. Dan had to settle for 5^th while Rich Girvin, Tom Smith and Wayne Secore closed out the field.

 

Ray’s 4.007 second lap was good enough for the fastest lap of the evening followed by Richard P and Dan. Woody and Peter put up identical 4.117 times.
