PS: Rick if you'd like a higher quality scan, just PM me with your email. The files were too heavy to post here as scanned, so had to reduce the image quality a bit.

Greg: what's with the 1.95 MB limit on posting at a time? Seems kind of low, no?

I would love to have them until the day I find the magazine it is in for myself.

Those were possibly the greatest days of my life! Every dog has his day. Yes, I was extremely lucky but eventually the luck ran out and I came down to earth again. Just shows what can happen when we try.

Something special about the people, places and things involved with slot cars. I dropped out of racing and into high school in 1969 and eventually became an electronic technician in Salt Lake City. Started racing again about nine years ago at 'The Slot Shop' in Salt Lake. Relocated to southwest Utah two years ago (no racing here) so I look forward to joining a few of my old and new friends for Retro races at BPR.

It is really nice to be remembered and to have friends like you!! Thanks for the memories

Cool story! The most impressive thing to me is that you were able to keep you composure in such a high pressure situation. No way I could have done that. I would have folded like a lawn chair!

About the only thing I remember about that actual race was telling myself over and over again to stay calm and focus.

It's funny, this thread was very active until the subject of the thread makes an appearance. Now it's dead. How weird is that!

Where's Charlie's number one fanboy, Rick Haynes?

Is that what you wanted to know?

Charlie,

Were you close to any of the big pros or factory teams or did you do this all on your own?

Amazing accomplishment for sure!

Hi Charlie, fantastic experience to have. When you read the race report does it bring back any memories?

Love to hear any back story, like how long you had been racing etc. Anything. Great story.

Any idea what happened to the car?

I noticed that on Charlie's car and thought, he being a kid, he was running endbell drive because he didn't know any better. Then I looked at the other cars and they were endbell drive as well. I'm surprised. I thought pros had switched can drive by then.

Angle winders took over about 4-5 months prior to this race. The switch to can drive started in earnest in around mid ‘69 iirc.

Two racing firsts in this Western States race for me- my 1st anglewinder frame, built at Bryan Warmack’s, and my 1st use of a Russkit controller. Well, three if you count winning the amateur race ;)

To follow up on my post of September 2019, I found Charlie Nelson with the help of many nice people. He lives in Utah, and he still races slot cars.

I stopped by to see him last winter, and I had a great time. I believe it is fair to say we are friends now. He is a very interesting fellow with a good memory, so talking slot car history with him is good fun. I have plans to meet him in California at the big year-end race in LA sometime.

But in this post, I am looking for contact info on Howie Ursanier , another slot racer from the 1960s. I have heard he was in  Wisconsin.

Any info will be appreciated.

Hey Rick, I’m at RA right now for the vintage Austin Healey meet, 30 Spridgets in today race. We ( my son, two grandsons, and I ) came up by way of Lucky Bob’s and we all ran a few laps before heading north.
