Coupes on the Royal – 1/7/2020
The MVH Tuesday Night Retro Series started the new year (and decade) running Coupes on the American Royal. With only five racers in attendance, Race Director Richard Payne set the race up to run in 14 heats with either one or two marshals plus one person to man the track calls at the computer. This left either 2 or 3 racers on the track at any given time. And it worked!
Cars in Tech:
John Weaver was running in the 3.7s during practice and was an easy bet to take the lead once racing began. His only competition was Dave Panich, but it wasn’t going to be much of a challenge.
By the change to the inside lanes, Richard P and Rich Girvin were the only racers that were in striking distance of each other as Mr. Payne was leading Mr. Girvin by one lap, 155 to 154. Race leader John had logged 178 laps which equated to a 7-lap lead over Dave while Wayne Secore trailed Rich G by 5.
Richard P came on strong in the second half, logging 6 more laps than in the first half (the best anyone else did was plus 1) and opening his lead on Rich G to 7 laps to take the bottom step on the podium. Meanwhile, Weaver was coasting to the win by a 12-lap margin with Dave solidly in 2nd place.
The fastest lap went to Weaver with a 3.788. Rich G’s 3.843 lap was 2nd, but it might have been a rider (?). Blue was the fast way around the Royal as the entire field other than Wayne logged their fastest lap on Blue.
Finishing order, laps completed, best-lap time and best-lap lane:
- John Weaver 355/2 3.788 BL
- Dave Panich 343/6 3.944 BL
- Richard Payne 316/13 4.180 BL
- Rich Girvin 309/15 3.843 BL
- Wayne Secore 294/5 4.390 GN
