Dowst's intention is to recreate the existing competition between American / asymmetric / front engine units and the European / symmetric / rear engine unit in the Indianapolis Prize of 1961 in Strombecker circuit sets with the Cooper and Indy Racer inside.

The Cooper can actually be considered an "Indy," because he ran the Indianapolis of 1961.

Regarding the Strombecker marketed as "Indy Racer", it is a generic based on 6 1:1 units, almost all or all with A. J. Whatson chassis and Offenhauser engine. In fact, the 1/32 version sold as a customkit was a "6 in 1" that allowed to reproduce any of these 6 versions, having up to 6 versions of decals to choose from, 2 types of exhaust pipes and 2 positions where to place the external oil tank.

Thanks for all the info; I was going to ask about that "6 in 1" thing!  :)

Do you know which (6) cars' decals were included? I wonder if someone has a complete set of those that they could photograph and show...

I might have an old decal sheet around and I will scan it if I can find it.    If you watch Ebay, you can pickup a few of those Strom Watsons fairly cheap.   Just wait till warm weather when buying fever goes away and you'll see some cheap ones.

There is a copy of Model Car and Track  that has a feature on Bob Clidinst's early home routed oval.  Bob was Indy fan #1 and had a whole assortment of  the Strom Indy cars built up.   He lived in Indy and spent every year at the track all season and did scale drawings of most cars.    He also designed the Strom Dirt Track Racer and I think the  6 in 1 Watson kits.

He's been gone a few years, but  Lance Sellers has molds Bob made of several 1/32 Indy cars and he sells a few on Ebay from time to

here is some info from Beardog and the 1/32 scratch building forum

Here's (another) question about these models.

A current eBay listing has 2 cars for sale; one each with the older can-motor and one newer type. Here are a couple of side-by side photos taken from that listing:

s-l1600 (1).jpg

s-l1600 (2).jpg

The newer style with the open-frame motor appears to be a slightly longer model, and I don't think it's because of the missing rear "bumper". Is this indeed the case, or is it just the angle of the photos?

Perhaps someone who has an example of both can verify this, one way or the other...

EJ's Hobbies has original chrome trees for the Strombecker Indy Roadster with all the original  trim parts.

I'm not sure this is appropriate to ask, but here goes.

I was in contact with Ed via email; I guess at some point he tried to mail me his catalog (to both my PO box and then street address) but for some reason both times it was returned to him. He told me he didn't have time to mess with it ( and I don't blame him) so I guess I'm not able to deal with him now directly. Which leads me to ask this:

I wonder if one of you gentle souls would be willing to act as a "go between"? I could send you $$, you could order the items and have them sent to you, then forward that stuff to me.

I know this all sounds very odd, but Ed has a few small items I "need"...

Moderators: If asking this is not cool, then please delete.

Thank you.
