No kidding, you want to learn about the various Chaps get the Falconer book.   It traces the chassis, interior tubs and body designs.   It pictures cars from various races. Remember that the car changed from race to race.      Part of  the enjoyment I get from building copies of old race cars is reading books dedicated to those cars.    I don't build great cars like some guys here, but I make  copies that I am happy with.    I have reference books that  have great photos of these great old racing cars and they give me something to shoot for.

Your questions won't bother anybody on here.

Matt

Thanks.  :)

I have a couple sets of rear tires on the way from Paul Gage: according to him, they are the correct tires for the Cox model. Does anyone know offhand if: they have raised writing on the sidewalls, and if so, what "brand" are they? If they don't, and one would like to find some (other than originals) were would one go?

Details, details, details...

Those are pretty nice; looks like they may be "unfinished" on the back side. Can anyone verify this, and if so, does it really matter? Except in the case of an open-wheel car, I guess it wouldn't...

Thanks for the link, by the way. I had heard of "Professor Motor", but hadn't (yet) found his home page.

EDIT: It appears the Ortmann tires are "unfinished" on the back sides. I guess that's no big deal...

Bruno in France/"Slotcartyres" makes nice urethanes with both sides finished, not the  rough finish like an open sided mold

At the start of this thread, I mentioned it looked like the small intake "scoops" on the lower side panels should be black, not the white I had assumed they were. Prototype photos seemed to verify this. However...  :)

...there is currently an eBay listing for a "Vintage 1965 Cox Advertisement", and here it is:

Cox 1965 Ad.jpg

If you look closely, you can see that those little scoops are white.  :shok:

What this means is that if the Cox people had had access to this forum back in the day, they could have checked here and learned that those scoops should have been black...   :)

I suppose that all depends on whether you're wanting to be historically accurate or trying to replicate Cox's interpretation of what it should look like. I prefer mine to look like the real car. That's not the only thing Cox got wrong. In most pictures of the real cars the roll bar is Black

Paul Gage tires are great if you're planning to race the car however they are not a great reproduction. Bubbles on the sidewalls from air getting into the silicone and the back side of the tires have zero detail due to the open molding process he uses. Other than getting lucky on Ebay this is the only source I've found for NOS original rear tires.   https://www.vintages...om/catalog4.htm

One of the chassis tubs had a chrome roll bar, and the other 2 tubs had a black roll bar.

Thanks Mark; that looks like a good option.

I think this fellow was mentioned at some point, somewhere; if I recall, the general opinion was favorable. One does wonder how long it would take to get these from France to here...anyone?

He's very well known here Mark, and is used to shipping internationally.

Should take about a week to 10 days, judging from how long it takes in the other direction!

Is Herm's still active? Sent him an order via email a few years ago and never got an answer...

Mark, in my experience, the tires from France are the best urethanes made.    They have rounded sidewalls and are made in a full mold with no openings.    I have ordered 40 pair of more from Bruno and they are all excellent.  One thing is that his tires do not have sidewall  names cast into them, if that is important to you.

I have bought a few Paul Gage, but the back side looks like they were trimmed with a chainsaw!   Maybe they are not that bad, but they don't compare to Brunos.    I will post some pictures later.

Thanks guys.

I will go ahead and buy a set of rears (I've got some NOS front tires on the way; front tires and wheels seem easier to find on eBay) and see how that goes.

FWIW, here is a Paul Gage tire on an Aurora 1/32 Mustang:

As you can see, it looks fine on the outside, and seems to have plenty of "grip".
