Started this post to share our favorite race car stuff, slot or 1/1.

What books do you research to get the history and details correct?

What form and period of racing felt like it was the best to you?

Post drift will be encouraged. It's all good here. What cars inspire you to build models of them? Just to see them move down the track at speed.

Good topic.

My 'go to' books are these:

book #2.jpg

book #3.jpg    :)

I always liked the 1960s: maybe it was because I became aware of auto racing in that decade. Listening to the Indy 500 on the radio was a big deal; having Foyt and Gurney win at Le Mans was a big deal; having Clark then Hill win at Indy seemed like a cool thing.

The exotic sports cars of Can-Am held a real fascination... heck, I even liked stock cars back then!

Getting a slot car set in '66 didn't hurt either, I suppose.

Am curious what others will say... how about you, Martin?

Books:

Can-Am, both releases by Pete Lyons.

                     Jaguar Sportscars  by Paul Skilleter

Powered by Jaguar by Doug Nye

                     Ferrari by Fitzgerald and Merit

The Porsche Book by Lothar Boschen and Jurgen Barth

Lola, Chaparal, etc. books by David Friedman

                     Bugatti by Hugh Conway

                     Offenhauser by Gordon White

                     Sebring by Ken Breslauer

And on and on and on....

Favorite race car; Hmmm... I pretty much like all the ones I have driven. Each has it's own high points. I'll have to think on that for a while.

Favorite racing series; Just as I have said before, Can-Am. Although the '60s and '70s prototypes are right up there.

Favorite road car; I guess my Jaguar E-type. Fast, smooth, comfortable. Just enough room for myself and a female passenger, and not much else.

Favorite hobby; Sorry folks, still model railroading. Followed by R/C warbirds, but I don't do much of that anymore. Too much walking to fly them.

Slot racing has become my most active hobby lately, but still do a lot of building of 1/48 scale trains.

I was pretty hung up on these cars in high school art class. I spent lot of time trying to capture the color of McLaren orange on canvas.

As I remember the painting was something like this magazine cover shown below. This other pic is the way the light changed the color on the surfaces.

Strange what engages us as a student.

Matt and I have the same tastes in automotive books!

In addition to the Offenhauser book there's the "twin" book titled "The Miller Dynasty" which is the lead-in to the Offenhauser book.

Era was the STP Turbine Indy car. Saw it as a kid at Riverside Raceway.

Favorite is Dan Gurneys AAR Eagle Indy Car return to open wheel racing. The shop is walking distance from our home.

Rick Mears was my favorite Indy car driver. That guy seemed very comfortable in his Penske cars. Can-Am in its hey-day sure was a hoot. Pretty hard to get around those McLarens.

I like this thread.

Rick Mears, Big Al, AJ, Mario, Big Dan,  I like all  those Indy guys, Hurt, PJ the list goes on. McLaren and Hall in the mid-'60s Can-Am. So many greats from the '58-66 era

I like these cars.

Bill,

I bought 'Golden Age' when I was in sixth or seventh grade, at a local bookstore that had a big stack of them on close-out for $2 each. Wish I'd bought them all...

That book, and Rod & Custom magazine, led to my life-long love of old cars.

For you, Roy. And thanks to Rick Hill for the body.

Matt: Yes, I do. But it is not a roundy-round layout. Strictly point-to-point, i.e. you move cars from siding to siding according to waybills,

just like a real railroad.

I remember E. J. Potter. He was a regular at US 30 dragstrip. I always was in awe of his apparent lack of fear of death. Like Evel.
