I don't get how the braid didn't fry on 36V.

The stands that we used for the 36v. cars were thicker than what I see in those pictures. Stranded braids could be bought from several sources, and with different strand sizes. I know my car would have fused those braids into a solid mass at 36 volts. Burning braids were pretty common, we usually changed them after each run.

Mike I'm guessing Marks Magwinders 1.08 was on 16v so that would make it the fastest padlock on modern voltage using an alinco magnet.
As for breaking the 1 sec barrier with a vintage motor my rewound champion 36d using all vintage parts except the windingss has gone under a sec a few times now.
