I read you post and thought, what the hell, I'll try them out. Someone's got to. So I click on the link to buy them and they're already sold!
You guys are killing me. I gotta find a new hobby. Maybe Beanie Baby's would be less frustrating.

Thanks again Martin!

Martin alerted me that another 2 sets of foam Candies was on eBay and I bought them.
They look like silicone, but they are soft, way softer than silicone Candies. And they're very sticky. I had a heck of a time getting them out of the tubes. That might be from deterioration.

I would still like to know what " CASTORGLASS" means
Anybody ever use these back in the day?
Posted 11 July 2020 - 07:44 AM
To a bottle collector, castor glass is the one color & sometimes clear bottles that castor oil came in. Some were highly ornate. Now how this applies to the stampings on the Candies labels, your guess is as good as mine. That stamping did not appear on their bottles from 1967-69 when we had to run silicones.

The labels show a PO box in a city called Winter (something). Is it known what company made Candies tires? Maybe that city or the manufacturer of Candies could be the start of a lead on who made Castorglass and what is was. Perhaps it was just their trade-name for a particular type of silicone. The Castolite company I think is based out of Chicago so my guess is Castorglass wasn't made by them.

I'm not home now, so can't check, but pretty sure it's Winter something Florida...

I don't know anything about the Candies but here in Central Florida we've got Winter Park, Winter Garden, Winter Springs, and Winter Haven. There's even a Winter Beach a bit further south on the east coast.

Too bad the ad didn't give a street address rather than a P.O. Box, I might have ben able to track down who actually made them. If they lived in Winter Park, FL (probably a safe assumption) their home raceway was probably Aloma Model Raceways, which was a huge 4-track American Model Raceways facility. Funny thing is that while I raced there from 1965 to 1968 I don't remember anyone using silicone tires.

Not Candies or Twinkies
But these have to take the prize for the most outrageous color combo. Now for sale.
I wonder if these are home made or factory?

I'd call those striped.

Mark, that's actually a pretty exceptional pair. They normally don't have that much swirl and are that uniform. Much better than anything I got!

I have a thing for Candies tires. There were two things I drooled over in the counter at the track when I was very young. One was the Russkit Black Widow they had, and the other was swirl Candies.
So I watch for them on eBay. Most are not very uniform and don't look all that great. This pair was was pretty darn nice! And I wanted them! But my bid didn't even come close. $38 plus tax for a used pair. Yikes!
This is a post I regret. You don't see many of them, when I did find them, the price was low. I bought a couple pair new in the tube for less than $20 each. Now they cost way more than that. I attribute that to this thread sparking interest in them. I didn't know I had a secret!
