Speaking of Roosevelt Raceway ..  My brother and I, participated in a (maybe) 10 hour Enduro, held on the 300 foot (Indy) track.  I remember Howie and Bob Emott ran it, as well.  My brother and I, had trouble keeping our lights working.  We ran one (1) - Comet 26D mill, all 10 hours.  We were so naive, that we didn't even have a spare.  We were going to run another Roosevelt Raceway enduro, with Ziggy Hurano.  But, the night before the Enduro, someone decided to burn down the raceway.  Strangely enough, the showcase with all the Enduro cars, was untouched.

I'm fairly certain, that my brother and I, brushed shoulders with Clyde at Polks.  We were (usually) the first in line, every Saturday morning.  The one armed elevator man would wisk us up, to the fourth floor.  You'd place your name on a list, wait your turn, then drop a quarter into the lane timer.  We were fortunate to have run on the 4 lane track, then the eight lane track.  Howie and the boys, used to run on Thursday nights.  That was a long time ago ..

Man you brought back some memories about Polk hobbies

what I remember was that cranky elevator

and how tight it was racing on the 8 lane track

I didn’t know that Rosevelt had a fire and burned down

when I came back from Vietnam in 1971 it seemed that slot racing was gone in the NYC area but I could have been wrong

the country was in the middle of a recession and war was still on people’s mind

I am just glad I was able to participate In slot cars platinum era

because it was just that and I was to be a part of it!

Question

did anyone ever make it out to the huge Auroa race track out on Long Island ?

I did once

it was amazing

I convinced my grandfather who had a car to drive me out there

I think it was in Hempstead Long Island?

it was the center of the universe of slotcar raceways

hopefully some has some pictures of that place

because it was amazing

Hey Roger ..  Somewhere around 1967 ..  I remember, that you had to qualify, first.  Then, the cars were impounded.  When Ziggy called us, with the news, we thought he was kidding.  But, after riding out to Queens, we saw the burnt out remnants.  Ziggy had a very cool car ..  It was a turbocharged Corvair, with a 4 speed manual.  Ziggy didn't say a lot, but, his motors certainly did.  Then, Roosevelt Raceway was no more.

A couple of months later, we ventured into Dykman Hobbies, where we introduced to Tony Deville, Sr. and Jim Greenaway.  But, that's another story ..  I should write a book ..

When I was in my early twenties going to the monthly races involved running Group seven motors instead of the Group 12s we ran on Friday nights. There was one older racer who ran with us who tried out the Group 7s then sold his equipment, though he still ran with us on Fridays. I asked him why he was not racing the faster stuff and his answer was “I just can’t keep up with your reflexes. Friday’s car are slow enough I can keep up but not those 7s.”

As I’ve gotten older I am reminded that conversation. Personally I still race for fun and I shoot archery for my hand eye exercise.
