In the last big SCRRA race of 2021, Buena Park Raceway will be hosting a special event, a Can Am Enduro, in the honor of our good friend and slot racing legend, John Cukras.

The Enduro will take place at BPR on Saturday, December 18th and will be run on both the Flat track and the King track and will be about 3 1/2 hours in length.  Teams will be made up of at least 3 drivers and the usual SCRRA Can Am rules will apply.  No qualifying and we'll just let the computer determine starting lanes.  The race will begin on the Flat track and all teams will run 15 minutes on each lane and the laps and sections will be tallied.  We'll then move to the King track and the duration will be 12 minutes on each lane with the final results being the total laps from both tracks.

Teams may sign up here on Slotblog or on Facebook under the SCRRA Retro Racing section and a sign up sheet has been also started at BPR.   Entry fee is $30 per person and much of the proceeds will be going to the John Cukras family.

T-shirts and posters for this event will also be available in a remembrance of John at the link below...

Buena Park Raceway will be open at 8AM on race day and tech inspection will begin at 9:30AM.  More details to follow shortly...... :)

That's a pretty impressive team Eddie. You give Terry 5-10 minutes on the flat track and he'll be dialed.

The only problem with having Terry on your team is all the OTHER teams benefit from his superb turn marshaling!

Not exactly. Same chassis required. Otherwise,  I'm guessing we'll need to change tires, crown gear, and remove weight for the King. Gonzo has a slick quick-change motor pod that will do it all in a few seconds. We're not going that extra mile!

  Mike,

The body and chassis that the car teched with must remain the same but obviously can be repaired throughout the course of the race.  All other parts other than the body and chassis can be replaced at anytime.

Unfortunately, and for many reasons, we could not seem to get as many teams together as we would have liked and a couple teams couldn't make it at the last minute, and we ended up with 3 teams. We also had a lot of people who showed up to say hi and watch and pay their respects to John and even John's old friend and slot racer Fred Hood made it down.

  The teams were.......

Team Jet City              Gary Donahoe,  Dennis Samson,  Eddie Shorer,  Terry Schmid

MAGARAMA               Mill Conroy,  Phil Nyland,  Bryan Warmack,  Nesta Szabo

Bad Company             Hector Gonzalez,  Vic Dubrowsky,  Tim Herrera

P1210611.JPG

P1210609.JPG

Concours Winner             Team Jet City         Dennis Samson paint

The format was to run 2X through the Flat track and 2X through the King track with 7 minute heats on the FT and 5 minute heats on the King Track.  From the minute the power went on you could see all teams were running well with Jet City running an older Gary Donahoe modified Kamo chassis,  Magarama with a newer conventional chassis and Bad Company with a completely innovative chassis the featuring a floating and quick change motor box and floating front end. (pics later)

Everyone ran pretty much trouble free for the nearly 2 hours and the lap totals on the Flat track were...

                           1)          MAGARAMA              1444 Laps

                           2)          Team Jet City             1437

                           3)          Bad Company            1380

We took a proper and lengthy lunch break and the racers were allowed time to change motors and get their cars ready for the King track.   Bad Company started running into a few problems but Jet City and Magarama continued trouble free and fast were often seen nose to nose for entire heats as neither was giving an inch and after the first half on the King track Jet City had picked up the few laps they were down and the 2 teams were separated by inches!....

P1210614.JPG

The 2nd half on the King track had the 2 teams continuing this epic dogfight with again some nose to nose racing for 7  heats and when the 15th heat ended the cars once again stood dead even!!

P1210615.JPG

The last 5 minute heat was a sprint race and saw Jet City driver and 60's slot racing legend Terry Schmid slowly and slowly pulling away with Magarama just unable to keep up and coming off near the end in an effort to hang on!  An absolutely classic race and congrats Team Jet City on the win!  Both teams ran flawlessly all day and Bad company ran to a close 3rd.

More than a few spectators commented on what a fun race this was to watch!!

                                    OVERALL RESULTS

            1)      Team Jet City              2717 Laps

            2)      MAGARAMA               2715

            3)      Bad Company             2504

A little after race surprise was added by new Buena Park Raceway owner, Robert Range (center) when he announced that BPR was awarding a 50 DOLLAR BILL to the racer with the fastest lap on each track!!  Bryan, with the fastest lap on the FT and Eddie with the fastest lap on the King track reluctantly took the money. :laugh2:   Thanks Robert!!

    Podium car pics up shortly...........

Great thanks to Bryan and especially Mill for their efforts to organize this special event to honor John Cukras. Also, thanks to JK for the prizes and to Buena Park Raceway.

Team Jet City had an intense battle with Magarama from the first lap to the last with every driver trying his hardest, and every lap driven with intensity. The result was not known until the last few seconds of the event. Team Bad Company can also be very proud of their performance, driving a new retro chassis design by Gonzo . From the smiles on their faces, it was obvious that a great time was had by all.

As I answered one friend who said, "Only three teams?"...   Quality, not quantity!  :-)

It would have been nice to have more participation, to be sure, but I haven't had that much fun in a long time, and I do a LOT of racing with various groups. In one of the last heats Bryan and I spent the entire six-minute heat not more than a few inches apart on the King track. Those who attended had a fantastic time.

Much appreciation to Mill and Bryan for keeping it going, and to my teammates for a great run. Our car was a pleasure to drive.

Looking forward to some positive changes at Buena Park Raceway.

Stay tuned!

"Only 3 Teams" allowed an unusual situation in an enduro as 2 teams pulled away alone and unfettered by all the usual  issues that an 8 team race might bring. I don't see Jet City and Magarama running the same close race if a full field had turned out......

Eddie, what are you going to spend your money on!  :laugh2:

Bryan, great remark to Eddie! ^^^ Sure did look like a heck of a race. And a LOT of fun. Good to see Terry back and Nesta too! When did BPR come under new ownership?

Hopefully, he'll keep the flat track. Well, glad things went well for the race. Merry Christmas Bryan. Take care.

Finally, back to finish the race report!  Here are the podium cars as raced on the King track. All cars had about 10-15 grams additional when racing on the Flat track that was remove when the race went to the King track.

P1210621.JPG

P1210622.JPG

P1210623.JPG

1st Place           Team Jet City          This car was an older KamoSpeed chassis that Gary modified for the race and ran awesome on both tracks!  It was noted that Gary ran 4 heats in a row at one point without an off and Eddie set fastest lap on the King track!

P1210624.JPG

P1210625.JPG

P1210626.JPG

2nd Place           MAGARAMA            Other than the tuning fork center rails and the front bumper a pretty conventional chassis by Bryan and he ended up setting fastest lap on the Flat track!  Good run Nesta as he ended up winning one of his stints on the King track!

P1210627.JPG

P1210628.JPG

P1210629.JPG

3rd Place          Bad Company            A totally unconventional chassis by Hector with a motor box and front end/guide box that is pinned and independent from the main chassis and rails. Some of Hectors hardbodies with this style of chassis are nearly unbeatable and this one worked great also!

P1210631.JPG

Thanks Nesta and Kathy for the wonderful poster of John and thanks Nesta and Mill for helpng organize the race! Thanks also to JK Products and Racemasters for the race prize donations and a Thanks Robert Range, the new owner of Buena Park Raceway who surprised a couple racers with a little cash prize for the fastest lap on each track!  Congrats to Jet City on the win in a SUPER close all day battle with Magarama!  Despite a light turnout, an awesome day of racing for the 2 teams!

The next scheduled day of SCRRA Retro racing will be Saturday,January 8 on the Flat track at Piranha Speedway. In preparation for the upcoming Checkpoint Cup later next month, Piranha has also added a Retro race the following day, Sunday January 9, with a Flat track Coupe race in the morning and a King track Can Am race in the afternoon. More details to follow shortly. Have a happy and safe New Years!!
