I was wondering if anywhere else used the AMC Javelin as a Police car?

If I remember correctly these things would do 200 mph!

This car is on display in the lobby of the Criminal Justice Center, Montgomery Alabama.

Cool police car, but cars back then, like that didn't go 200 mph.

Very few cars go that fast now.

Screenshot_20220108-002003_Google.jpg

That's a special Ford GT race car on a 3.6 mile straightaway.

In doing the search, it was mentioned the street version of a Ford GT "only" hit 164mph.

Seems like I remember one of those with the blue light flashing parked behind me on the side of I-20. Or was that a Mustang?  :bad:

Cool, when I was a wee lad I worked at Tony's Shell in Mineola for free just to be around cars. I remember the Old Westbury police had two highway patrol cars we would service. I would get excited when they came in. Ford Galaxies around 1966/67 models. Four doors with dual quad 427's and 4 speeds. Dual batteries ( I remember because I had to add water LOL) and certified speedos.

A few years later on a camping trip with a bunch of gear head rowdys in Haines falls NY the Police came. Won't get into the details but the Sheriff had a '69 Chevy Kingswood estate wagon with the woodgrain and all. Factory 427 and a 4 speed! I bet they didn't make too many of those. He was actually a little more friendly when we talked about his car but still gave us tickets LOL.

There's more but I would have to start thinking and it's too early for that.

Hey, how about a new retro class called Trans-Am !?

The series was best known for competition among American V8 coupes such as the Ford MustangChevrolet CamaroPlymouth BarracudaMercury CougarAMC JavelinPontiac Firebird, and Dodge Challenger in the 1960s and early 1970s, driven by some of the most famous names in auto racing, like Mark DonohueParnelli JonesDan GurneySam Posey and Bob Tullius, to name just a few.

Something like a 4" stock-car class?

I know JK had some bodies, I suspect they still do.

In the 1970's the police in my town had an AMX that was confiscated in a drug case. They had it repainted in black, but no mars lights. They used it as an unmarked squad. They also had a Shelby GT-350H they got in the same way. It was already black, and unmarked. I would see it occasionally on IL. RT83 pulling over speeders. I thought I was going to get nailed by him one day coming home from work. He shot out from his hiding place under the 290 tollway overpass, and shot up right on my tail, but then hit the brakes and pulled over on the shoulder. Not sure what that was all about, I was over the speed limit. Only thing I can figure is that it was driven by one of the two police officers that lived in my neighborhood, and recognized me, giving me a pass. When I was younger, Officer Robert Johns used to drive me home from the police station when I was picked up for being naughty. He would be the most likely one.

Back then Elmhurst had Galaxy Interceptors for squads. They even had emblems on the trunk lid that said "Interceptor". They were 427 FE powered, with dual quads and a C-4 trans. One was donated to the local high school when it's useful life was done. There was a ceremony when the keys were handed over, so I went. I was out of school by then, but wanted to show off my Ferrari to prove I wasn't such a zero after all.

Maybe modify and adopt the old retro angle winder rules?

Don't know why this class is no longer active

Scalextric offered this car in 1/32 a few years ago as stock number C4058. The model has has an operating "gum ball machine", headlights, taillights and a siren sound.

For whatever reason, it was not that popular and can be easily be found at a discount from many dealers.

The Alabama State Police Javelins had the flat hood rather than the cowl-induction hood seen on the Scalextric model. The patrol cars did not have the front spoiler, although I understand that the front spoiler would have been helpful at high speeds.

I'd be all in for a Retro Trans Am class.  That 1:1 series was huge back in the exact same time period as the golden age of slot cars.  I'm sure a lot of the present day Retro racers had Pony Cars and would like to see a class like that.  I would be able to recreate my Z-28 in 1/24 th scale and wouldn't even have to change my signature team color. :)

I would imagine there would be scary, if not fatal lift long before it could reach anywhere near 200.

Great idea! 4" retro angle winder trans am class. they would be rockets with a cr102 motor! i would have to learn how to drive all over again. may be hard to squeeze another class in an already busy day of racing. BUT, 2 min on 2 min between heats would move things along.

i may build one anyway...

How about making the TRANS AM class slower? More like an entry level thing. 2 minutes on 2 off seem like a great starting place.

Sorry Mike, not using the CR102's. Make it slower like the real cars would have been to the CAN-AM's, Coupes and F-1's.

Something to think about.

Hi Jay,

JK makes three bodies, a Chevy Camaro the AMC Javelin and I think a Dodge Charger?

The rules could be modified to fit the class I think.

I will suggest no extra spoiler on the body and maybe use the .790 rears with an .040 clearance like F! cars?

Just throwing it out there for others to chime in.

JK has these bodies that might be appropriate for Trans Am Racing (all 4" WB)

1971 Camaro

1971 Mustang

1971-1972 AMC Javelin

The Dodge Charger was not run in Trans Am.

OLEG has the Dodge Dart that raced in Trans Am during 1967.

.790 tires and .040 clearance could be the basis for a spec gear rule making for a simple set up drivers class. should be plenty fast enough for close competition at any driver skill level. .750 front tires? would give us a place to put wore out rears. best regards

True, but the Challenger was, driven by Sam Posey. Not sure if anyone makes a '70s Challenger, but it would be a welcome addition as far as I'm concerned.

To me, the 'light weight'  retro angle winder  (as currently used) is the wrong chassis for the lower downforce TA bodies.  Making the CHASSIS DESIGNS of the 4.5" vintage stocker into 4 inch angle winders would work well and be more like the 1960s production chassis....more brass and more FLAT track racing.

For chassis I would stick with a stamp steel chassis and definitely a entry level motor.  Not exactly sure what that would be but I'm sure there is something out there that doesn't click 4 second laps on a king.

I agree, I was thinking of suggesting a 120g minimum weight, with .750 x .375 fronts, same as current F1.

An angle winder chassis set up with the .040 rear clearance with .790 tires, 4 inch wheel base and 120g min weight should handle well, making it easy to drive for the new racer.
