This is what I have so far, a kit, a flag and a pinion; the rest of the parts are coming. This will be for the 12 March SERRA event at The Raceway in Cleveland, TN on the 131' flat track. For gearing I will have two CR102 motors set up, one with an 11T and the other with a 10

 

 

Here is a Jackal Jay Guard built recently

 

 

 

All I have to do is copy the masters, take their advice, use quality parts, and I'll be fine

Dom has been running a GT Coupe in New England made with 4 rails of .039 per side.

The kit parts came from the bag perfect, very impressive 

 

CR 2 degree tongue and eight .039 rails of Swiss plated wire. WB 4", GL 15/16" 

 

Rail wires rough cut with ends champhered and parts all jigged up. Thanks for all the help and support

Precise notches on the CR tongue perfectly match the Jackal nose piece. Tacked, checked for true, placed a pair of solder pieces in the tongue slots, slathered the works in acid and went full bore with the FX-601. Worked fine

 

 

I'm not sure what the hole in the nosepiece is for, but it gives me an indication the solder flowed sweet

 

 

The nosepiece rail gap slots are about .188" wide. 4 x .039 = .156. I see Jay Guard added a "spacer" to fill the gap, so I'll do the same. .156 + .032 = .188

 

 

Next step - .039 rail sandwiches

A hole in the nose piece -
a) a drill guide to put a piece of piano wire through the tongue to pin it in place.
b) alignment pin hole for a fixture that holds the brass during manufacturing

I've known & raced with Dom & his dad since 1996. Dom is very approachable with concerns or questions.

 

Bob, if that nose hole was meant for a piano wire reinforcement, there would have been a matching hole in the steel guide tongue also. But "b" is a good guess.

"CR" means "Chicagoland Raceway". It's not the stock tongue.

The hole in the nose is used for mounting a screw to affix the brass sheet to the milling plate.

Why only one screw hole? This is because the nose and pans each have a hole and the last part of the miling is to separate the three pieces.

As a check to verify the solder flowed 100%, it gave me pleasure to look at that hole and see success

Nosepiece fits like a glove with pins in the RGeo jig. Amazing how well this works - I'm just enjoying the ride. Rail sets are 5 Swiss wires - the middle one is .032. Tacked in for now

I like a strong rear end. A pair of gussets for the uprights, and I drizzled solder down into the manufacturing folds

 

 

Solder fills the gap between rails and bracket bottom just right

 

 

A pair of .039 wire pieces sit atop the .032 rails and run forward to meet the front end of the nosepiece for "redundancy insurance". Again, I drizzled solder down into the upright folds

Wishbone gizmo complete. Since this is for a flat track, I think it should be set up "loose" rather than "tight", so I used .055 wires. Basically just copying Jay Guard's design

Thanks Dom. Pan management bits are ready to go. Everything fits so perfect it's amazing

Chassis done. Scrub brushed with Dawn, baking soda, and SOS pad. No tumbling, it's a racehorse. Tomorrow, assembly begins

- CR102 broken in dry @ 5V for 15 mins, amp draw was about .5 and dead steady, as usual.

 

- 10T angled ARP pinion installed using a Swiss gizmo. I'm fairly skilled with pinions but the aluminum tool just makes it that much more foolproof. Bam, it's on and right where I want it.

 

- Jackal bracket hole required just a few swipes of a circular file to get the 10T through. It will require more hogging if I want an 11, but I won't do that until we test with the 10. It may even be better with a 9. We shall see.

 

- The big flat track likes soft wheels, so I glued natural rubber onto JK plastic small hubs.

i like that pinion tool, its the nuts! i cut a slot down the middle of the motor brace the same width as the arm shaft. this helped the installation of large pinions.

A "burp" in the build caused a delay, my own fault. I'm back on track now, thanks to friends who coached me 

Make sure you use a jig motor before laying rails to the Jackal motor bracket. Onward .......
