Lou Del Rosario's Elmsford Raceway (maybe the oldest commercial track in the USA, if not the world) was the host for the John Gorski Sr. Memorial honoring the father of custom-built slot car controllers and it was of course also our first Retro East Winter Championship race.

Race #1 was for Can-Ams on the Nuvolari track, which is pretty much the same as it was 25 years ago when I last raced on it. The only change all these years was made when it was resurfaced maybe 20 or so years ago. The finger (turn inside the bank) was made 4" wider in diameter. It still has the tighest turns you will probably see on any slot car track and you will certainly will never see another Engleman 220 like this. The track was squished together to fit between two poles in the original building. It makes for an interesting track that gets a lot more interesting when the marshalls are in place blocking a lot of the turns.

Posted Image

Posted Image

This turn had a 4" smaller diameter when I used to race at Elmsford 30 years ago.

The track has the same "character" as before which did cause a few issues with some cars but which will all be addressed before our next event. Some cars launched on red going into the bank as there is a slight rise on the straight right by the seam, and we all know Engleman seams on 1,000,000-year-old tracks are not super smooth. The cars with a tad extra front clearance had no issues. Lou promised that he will address the minor track issues before the next event, and is really pumped up on retro racing. We have a second race coming up there later in the series and look out for a big race in the spring. Possibly an IM Retro Nationals like his IM Nats they used to hold every year in October.

Posted Image

Seventeen racers showed up to do battle.

Posted Image

On the whole I think the East Coast cars have the nicest presentation.

Posted Image

Concours was up first and we now use the system where all the racers are given a blind ballot to express there choices. When the votes were tallied my Noose painted O/S Ti22 was third, Dean Willis's Eddie Mac O/S Ti22 was 1st, and Noose's beautiful O/S Ti22 was second.

Posted Image

Here is another shot of the 1st and 2nd place bodies.

Posted Image

Noose once again got all the cars teched in record time. Only a couple of drivers had issues with bodies being too thin and a little tape fixed the problem and made no difference to their performance on the track. This was the only new rule I believe for this season and everyone was pretty much legal the first time through tech.

QUALIFYING
Qualifying times where in the 7.5 range until Rob Kurylo ripped off a fine 7.252. Rob's time held for awhile until Matt Bruce did a 7.071 which looked like it might be unbeatable. Jay came close to getting Matt with a 7.085. I had to follow Matt and I guess somewhere in the back of my in my drug fogged brain something from 30 years ago found its way to the finger and turned a 7.033 to cut Matt. I was TQ until the great Wassmerman came up. Andy had been bragging of running under 7 secs. in morning practice and backed it up with a 6.807 after a few laps and he simply pulled his car off to save it.

First up was the C Main with two move-ups to the B. John Molnar lead all the way to win by three laps. Good job, John! Bruce B. (on R) was second to grab a move-up and Billy Walker (L) was third.

C MAIN
1) John Molnar, 125 laps
2) Bruce Baughman, 122
3) Billy Walker, 103
4) Keith Dickson, 102
5) Dom Roselli, 99

Fastest Lap, John Molnar, 7.317 secs

Posted Image

Noose took advantage of Ray Carlisi's inability to hook his controller up correctly on the track he has been telling us for a year he is king of and how he won some big Womp Womp race on ten years ago to win the B. LOL... Ray threw away a fair-sized lead with his brain fade but managed second and the last move up to the A. Jimmy Roselli with no practice did a fine job to take third.

B MAIN
1) Noose, 153 laps
2) Ray Carlisi, 152
3) Jimmy Roselli, 142
4) Lou DelRosario, 127
5) John Molnar, 117
6) Marty Pollack, 78
7) Harry Boudreau, 65
8) Bruce Baughman, 44

Fastest lap, Ray Carlisi, 7.521 secs

A MAIN

The "A" was a good race, Jay Kisling jumped into and early lead, I reeled him in, and lead the first four heats. Andy got by and slowly pulled away from Matt who was now in third place and myself a little every heat. The last heat started with Andy leading, I was second, and Matt third. I had problems on red and crashed one time too many to let Matt by in the last 30 seconds or so. Damn, you can't give him any chance at all because he will pounce... Congrats to Andy on an excellent drive...

Posted Image

Your truly third, Andy Wasserman first, and that pain in my butt Matt Bruce second.

A MAIN
1) Andy Wasserman, 180 laps
2) Matt Bruce, 178
3) tonyp, 177
4) Jay Kisling, 171
5) Ray Carlisi, 165, hooked up wrong again in the A Main
6) Dean Willis, 161
7) Noose, 160, launched
8) Rob "Kimi" Kurylo, 129, launched and lost his motor while running fifth

Fastest of the fast, fast laps heat by heat.

1) tonyp, 7.191, orange
2) Matt Bruce, 7.249, Black
3) Andy Wasserman, 7.179 red
4) Andy Wasserman, 7.078 orange
5) Matt Bruce, 7.181 orange
6) Andy Wasserman, 7.245 yellow
7) Andy Wasserman, 7.033 blue
8) Matt Bruce, 7.308 blue

Fastest Race Lap, Andy Wasserman, 7.033 secs

THE MACHINES!

Posted Image

Andy was TQ, won the main, and turned the fastest lap with this RTR I originally built for Sandy Gross to run, but Sandy did not have time to get to Elmsford to practice. Chassis is a tonyp/Warmack of course, O/S Ferrari body, Fast Ones Pro Slot, BIR rear tires, Chicagoland fronts. 7/28 gears, Red Fox guide, and 112 grams. Red stuff on pans is noise/vibration dampening rubber material. Look for Andy's car on eBay!

Andy use a Difalco controller and his home raceway is of course Elmsford.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Matt Bruce was second with his own chassis. I love this design. Matt used to buy chassis from John Gorski, but decided to try building and comes up with terrific designs that work. Matt is very creative and has the ability to drive his super-lightweight designs. Body is O/S Mcleagle, Fast Ones Pro Slot, Alpha rear tires, Bruce fronts. 7/27 gears, Red Fox guide, and 103.9 grams.

Matt uses a Third Eye controller and Liquid Lou's is his home track.

Posted Image

Posted Image

You guys have seen this chassis a million times already. I had it laying around and threw a motor in it to test. On race day it was better than my race car over the bump on red so I had to use it. Worked out pretty well I guess. LOL... It is the same Aero chassis I have been using with just a couple pieces of lead added to the pans for the flat track. O/S Ti22 by Noose, Fast Ones Pro Slot, JK rear tires, Chicagoland fronts, 7/28 gears, Red Fox guide, and 116.4 grams.

I used a Mistress Heather controller and Dom's Raceway is my home track.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Jay Kisling was fourth with this car. tonyp/Warmack, O/S Ti22, new Pro Slot motor, JK rears, J-Tech fronts, 7/27 gears, Red Fox guide, and 107 grams.

Jay uses a Carsteen controller and Liquid Lou's is his home track.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Rob Kurylo's luck has to eventually change. If an anvil was to fall from the sky on to the track, it would hit Rob's car. Rob qualified fifth and was running right behind Jay when he launched on red, tearing out his motor. tonyp chassis, JK Ti22, new Pro Slot, JK front and rear tires, 7/27 gears, and 116.1 grams.

Rob uses a Jaygee controller and Dom's is his home track.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Noose used this self-built chassis to win the B Main and finish seventh after problems in the A. The chassis is a torsion style based on a JK kit. Body is one of his beautiful O/S Ti22s. Noose also used a new Pro Slot, JK rears, Chicagoland fronts, 7/29 gears, Red Fox guide, and 122 grams.

Noose used a Mistress Heather Linear controller and every track is his home track.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Dean Willis in his first retro race got the last sit-out for the A Main and finished sixth. Nice job on a hard track. Chassis by Dean himself, O/S Ti22 painted by Eddie Mac, new Pro Slot motor, JK tires all around, Red Fox guide, and 114.8 grams.

Dean used a Difalco controller and calls Slots-A-Lot his home track.

Yes, I got my azz handed to me despite what I believe was a good car. Even Noose caught me in the B Main to win :laugh2: Tony ran a great race and in my opinion was my odds-on favorite to win. He sure tested enough, :laugh2:

I admit I was outperformed, as they say on "Pinks" on Speedvision.

Noose said all the MSG and preservatives in the Chinese sesame chicken takeout I ate caused my forearm to cramp up and trigger finger to lock up in the A Main. My foot cramped as well :laugh2:

I must say I never blew two controllers in one day each in separate mains by crossing the hookup wires

I think all of it had to do with 2 AM to 5 AM sleep the night before, my bad.

Regardles Andy, Matt, and Tony each dominated the A Main and that would not have been any different regardless of all the racing bloopers that some of us experienced.

It was a great race day IMO. I love the Nuvolari. Seeing my old race friends and high school chums Alan Pollack and Marty Pollack together again was a highlight of the day for me.

Very cool to see Jersey John win the C Main.

All I can say now, Tony, is wait for the rematch in January. :laugh2:

Ray,

I was wondering last night driving home, are the three controller hook-ups in a different order at Elmsford than other tracks and maybe you were just hooking up the same, as like at Dom's, without reading them? I know Lou's track is wired different than most. I honestly do not remember the order the clips go so I always look at the color and/or read the label. Maybe old age has an advantage.

Hey, you tested as many times as I did. LOL...

Mark,

Matt for sure is damn good, plus I am spotting him 22 years. I have enough trouble standing up for the whole main never mind trying to beat him...

I feel I had a good day if I stay within a lap or two; anything else is totally awesome.

Matt sure is tougher than a diamond in a granite mountain to shake loose during a race.

I thought Noose and Jersey John both and the others moving up in each heat showed great levels of competition and sportsmanship, especially when the track did not cooperate with them. According to Paul watching the bank in most of it, the hop on the problematic cars on red started a foot or two before the seam in the joint going into the bank.

Thanks to all who came and had a good time. I know it got off to a bit of a bumpy start but it did in the end show what retro is all about: everyone having a good time while a race is going on as well.

Bob did a wonderful job as race director/announcer. Lou, thanks for use of your raceway. It's always nice to see a good crowd for a race.

I'll tell you the track was a lot easier to drive without that pole in the middle of the drivers panel. I bet on 75% of the laps you drive at least one turn or straight is completely blind because of marshal's behinds in the line of sight.
