MOAM motor ballpark gearing advice please

I am still clueless on drag cars, even though I've built several. My task is building a car using a sealed FK motor called a "Moam," which I've never seen or heard of until now. A Slotblog search for "moam" reveals zero results. Here are the details:

 

1,000' long drag strip

Buick Riviera 4.5" wheelbase hardbody

Wheelie bars and rails will be .065" OD steel tubes

Rear wheel OD 1"

Full sidewinder with angled steel pinion and aluminum spur

A Google search reveals practically zero info. If it was my car I'd just use a CR drag motor. But somebody convinced the owner this is the hot ticket

The name looks engraved on it. Probably a motor someone discovered for another product and found out it was fast. For a time, paint ball gun motors were the rage here. I'd try gearing it the same as the other FK drag motors.

I do recall someone pointing out a high RPM FK motor with that style can cutout.

Even when people ask me about my motor, my only experience is on my track.

Along with track length, voltage and wiring size varies wildly from track to track.

People want you to nail it, where it's running at 100% it's potential, the first pass.

I've run incredibly fast with FK motors, in a few different genres of cars, but it's with a lot of experimentation.

Tire width is all important, along with the condition of the braid on the car.

My suggestion is start conservative, maybe 4/1, and if that's not getting it done, add or subtract a tooth on the pinion.

PS: I'm not sure why you would want to run an angled pinion in a full sidewinder car.

I think these MOAM motors first appeared on eBay early in the summer with claims of all sorts of high RPMs. I had no use for them, so paid them little attention.

That's where I've seen 'em too, I forget what MOAM stands for but they claim they're the fastest throwaway motors on the planet. I don't believe that they're sold through any traditional sales sources.

I've decided on 13/46 with .950 wheels. If the "Mother of all Motors" is as powerful as advertised, it should pull it, eh?  :laugh2:

I'm not sure why you assumed I edited Phil's post, but I assure you I didn't.

When I went to Phil's link, it said the item was no longer available but I was able to get to the original ad with the below... "interesting" product description.

It seems like it was written by the same guy who just waited on me at Arby's, who asked his co-worker for the tweezers, so he could serve me my cherry turnover.

"Just keep in mind you are dealing with a motor that will compete with Group 7 cars, but it comes in a can."

Most likely true, if you don't mind losing.

Make sure you keep us informed on how the car worked out.

It's interesting that the person selling this motor lives in the Cleveland, TN area, same as Pablo. The MOAM doesn't even have ball bearings or an aluminum endbell. How can it be the "Mother" without them?

The ball bearings are from the Father. The FOAM will be the BB version. I can only imagine it's in the works.

This made me curious about Chinese motors, so I did a little Internet search. Nothing like an FK-130 with 95K rpm no-load, but it's not difficult to have one's very own 75K ball bearing, neo mag motor in a variety of can styles with custom logos. No worries, though; I'm not interested in bringing out another line of FK motors.

 

Note the seller compared a "MOAM" to a Phoenix. The original Phoenix is a 60K motor. If the "MOAM" is a 70 or 75K motor, it'll be a lot faster. Actually, I've seen a pretty similar motor with a different can hole shape, and it was very fast - until it melted a brush spring-arm.

Riviera drag car was cobbled together enough for a track test yesterday using the "MOAM" powerplant. Gearing started at 13/46 with .950 wheels

Owner said it's really fast and has no bad habits. The MOAM motor definitely has lots of beans but was wasting some power on wheelspin and needed lots of glue. So today I re-geared it 12/46. That should improve it; we shall see. By no means am I endorsing or recommending this motor. It is what the owner had and we were curious, that's all. 

 

Body mounting system consists of brass rods up front through holes in body skirts, bend body out, rods go in. In back, pin tube with big head pins. Simple and it worked fine. Owner is going to do the body work once we get the tuning nailed down

The rears are 3/8 wide and I wonder if going a little wider, maybe 7/16, would be an improvement or not. If I shave the end off the pinion and find some Erkle style hubs, it is possible.
