That's a great slice of slot car history Dave. Thanks for taking the time to share. :good:

When looking at pics of my "finished" restored cars there was a detail In my excitement to "get it done", I had not added.

Its the intake duct that like the one on the Mag car.

You can see there is some tape residue on the inside of the body where the duct would have been taped.

It is a shaped piece of aluminum that takes the incoming air in through the nose and then through the radiator and then out the exit holes just ahead of the windshield.

It took me 2 versions to get the one I was happy with and it even clears the guide, nut and wires  :)

One last thing to top her off, I am looking through my decals to find the Ferrari nose badge, turns out they are not that plentiful at least in my stash.

I have some Ferrari waterslide decals. You want the small ones, or the big ones?

Thanks you Mark.

Thank you so much Pablo, its actually the rectangle ones that would have been placed on the nose.

These are what I am looking for. See pics, I have the ones that say NART .

Hi Pablo, thanks for looking. I do have the ones that say NART (North American Racing Team) like the one you show but I am looking for the ones that say Ferrari with the flag on top.

Those are the NART versions for Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team. What he needs are the non-NART versions.

This is what he needs;

ferrarinosebdge.JPG

Since it is very small, I use the ones from a 1/32nd scale set I have. If you are desparate, I will look and see what I have. If I don't have any left, and you are really  desparate, I'll try to print you some, on clear waterslide with no white, or white waterslide that you will have to be very careful trimming the outside perimeter to get rid of the white outside border.

Thanks for the offer Dave.

I did find some but they are from China. The seller's feedback is not great so not sure if I should take a chance  :wacko2:

I just read some of his Feedback, and read my the title of this post, "cars (or decals)I took a chance on"  :laugh2:

Have not pressed the button yet, hopping I can find this product in the US?

I wonder if the Ferrari police have discourage sellers in the US from using Ferraris logo?

Might be worth giving something a try. I can't guarantee the quality of my printing when you get that small. I checked, and I only have the ones for the back panel, which are way too large.

Thanks for the offer Dave, but for $10-11 its not worth troubling you. But I do apricate the help. :good:

I took a chance on the seller from China, I will let you know how it goes.

These should take care of several Ferrari's in the works. You can never have too many Ferrari's .

Someone must be able to make decals on a PC using decal paper. Your photo in post #34 would be a good master. The 1/32 guys on HRW & Slot Forum mention doing it.

I've been thinking about this, can't get it out of my head.

Martin, how in the world did you remove so much rust, so quickly, and so cleanly?

One hour of Martinizing.  :laugh2: I wish.

One hour of wire wheel

One hour in the tumbler

One hour with tooth picks and various dental tools

One hour with metal polish (more toothpicks and Q tips) etc.

then another one hour in the tumbler. Something like that. :)

It actually took the best part of a full day as I had to make the suspension parts that had been lost then after soldering the chassis gets another scrub.

The deep pits are still there, it was pretty bad.  Not sure exactly how long they had been in (poor) storage, but I would guess almost 50 yeas as MESAC packed up in 1976.

Interestingly the mag chassis was pretty easy as it had been protected with a clear finish of some kind, it flaked off pretty easily, but it had done its job. Once disassembled, it was tumbled and then re-clear coated.  Below are before pics.

I make decals all the time, but even with a very high quality Canon printer, when you get down to the size Martin needs, resolution is lost. I can print those emblems with reasonable clarity down to about 3 mm tall. The photo in post #29 should give you an idea of how small this badge is on the real car. I would guess 2 mm or less on the model.

These badges were different sizes depending on the type car they were applied to. I have a real one from a 330GTC. It is certainly larger than the one on the F-1 car. It is just over three inches high, which I would guess is supposed to be 8 cm. That would be .131 inches, or about an 1/8th of an inch, in 1/24th. That would be close to what I could do and still be able to read the Ferrari line. But it would be a crap shoot. And it would still be oversize.

The best Ferrari nose badges I ever had were from Fred Cady. But due to the different colors, they had to be "layered" to get the complete badge. And finding any of those in usable condition is probably a pipe dream.

Thanks Martin for posting the suspension pix. If I EVER finish the vair, I'd like to start on a du-bro H-16 BRM (H-83?). The pictures really help.

No surprise that I'm confused but, photos of hinges always puzzled me. The arrows are pointing to the confusing part.

Hey Mark thanks for your interest.

The hinge at the front is what the body attaches too. The assembly with the body mounts can pivot up in back until those rectangular brass blocks hit the spring wires that are soldered to the rear axle bearings.

The hinge in the middle of the chassis is for the drop arm only, its pivot being U shape for more soldering strength.

Wow! Now I can visualize it. How many nites do you think he stayed awake thinking up that one?!!! Disguising the springs as upper radius arms. The plumber action kinda reminds me of A/FX Super II weights. This thread has put me in the right direction and, it's not into the crash fence.

Just shows the lengths a racer would go to so that he had a leg up on the competition. I couldn't drive worth a bag of bent nails, so I kept building chassis, trying everything I could think of to make a faster car.

Ferrari decals arrived the other day from China so I was able to add the nose badges to all the MESAC Don Sloan Ferrari's

Here is a couple quick pic's, I will take better shots outdoors some other time.

New pics in post 46 showing that the decals are of good quality and I can recommend them. Let me know if you need a link to the seller?

Do you think Don sloan a MESAC member liked Ferrari's ?

Thanks Mark, maybe I should do a bit more detail on the "green Ferrari #7" it had a nice surprize motor in it.

New post or continue with this one? With a new post you do get fresh eyes as it goes into that new post column.

Just spotted this thread Martin, great restoration work.

In your later photos, finally got a good look at the motor: a DC196-65X! Seems to have been fairly common in the pre-can era as a high-performance option. I found a fairly similar chassis recently (maybe one of Don Sloan's?), that had a Ferrari F1 body; but since we were racing this weekend in a 1.5 liter category, I replaced the body with an earlier Cooper F1 - nowhere near your workmanship of course, and that was reflected in my Concours points! I found a second car at about the same time, and that chassis is closer to your's with the can motor... and it already had a Cooper body!
