Note to self:
Test results BEFORE you shoot.
Here's some other propaganda to hold you over. It might be a minute before I shoot it yet again.
Billnh, this is (second photo)one of only two 1/24 scale HB's that I have. The other,a obligatory Chaparral 2D

One thing that not everyone knows is that that if you mix enough colors together, you end up with gray. The vehicle has color. That is why paint stores that mix paint use a tint rather than another color to get the final hue. And why mixing two paints might not give the results you are looking for. You can buy tints at an automotive paint store. It's how I came up with some of the wild colors I applied to custom cars in the 1960's and 70's.

Mark, are you using a primer of some sort on that red Ferrari body before you spray your color coats of yellow & blue?

I thought about it for this one.
Dave, exactly what I was talking about.

That could be the root of your painting problems. Prime & then spray the whole car yellow. The primer kills the red from showing through light colors. When the yellow dries, mask off the stripes & areas you want left yellow. Then spray the whole car with blue or whatever color you choose. Finally, remove your masking & you're left with a painted body that has yellow stripes. This order works for hard bodies. With clear bodies painted on the inside, you want to paint dark colors first to prevent light colors from being backed by darker ones. Sometimes backing the light colors with white or silver helps.

I've just about got the stripe where I want it. I've had enough for tonight.
Tune in tomorrow when I ask myself:
"How did that happen"

Just my 2 cents. The must for primer will clearly show any imperfections at this stage, then they can be easily be fixed.
.....and if you use a light grey or white, your top/color coat will be less, trying to cover red with yellow will require too much paint IMO.
I think Bill has got good advice here

Have you tried "Frog" tape yet? It comes in green & yellow. The yellow is for applying to sensitive surfaces. They both supposedly contain a chemical that practically eliminates paint bleed under.

Martin, you look like your in shock! Nothing's shocking!
There might be hope for me. I realized that I had neglected to affix the front valance! It might be bassackwords but, I'll prime the stripe before I shoot it. And then the bulk of the car. I'll even go as far as to mix flat white and black for a primer grey. Don't think I've got flat brown and red so, red oxide is out. Flat black surprisingly isn't the same as hotrod primer. Disagree if you want but, I can tell the difference.
I've measured the stripe 9 ways to Sunday and it's straight. I'm going to drift a little/lot in the next post.
And now,a word from the sponsor.

I haven't used Frog tapes yet. But the moisture in the paints helps activate the PaintBlock technology. I like the tan 3M tapes as well as clear & opaque vinyl shelf paper. I tried the blue 3M painters tape on one body & did not like it. That tape's adhesive was too thick to burnish well & evenly. The tape & vinyl I use does need good burnishing, but I've never had paint under-bleed with either.
I saw the yellow "Frog" tape used in a recent video from an English model maker. I do intend to try some & have seen it sold in some local stores.

Certainly vinyl is the best masking medium I have used. Plus it can be cut on a Cricut machine. Most public libraries have machines in their copier department. Check with them. It makes the whole operation so much easier.

The blue vinyl 3M tapes also comes in 1/16" width too. I got it & 1/8" at a local auto body supply shop. I would imagine Amazon has it too.

Only eight (8) or ten(10) more of these 1/32 Monogram cars to go. It occurred to me that the solution to indecision is to conquer it one drawer at a time. Problem is, what drawer to start with. 😬 Luckily, I started here before I figured out what/how to approach a starting point.
Tune in next week when we just might have some progress (forward)
