One thing I did come across that I hadn't seen before was Hill (or anyone) driving the 2E with a black wing.

Black or rather dark blue ?

Steve, you are correct. Phil Hill almost always drove with several types of half-helmets as you can see on most of his pictures. here are some:

Phil driving Chris Rea's replica of the 1961 Dino 246 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed a few years ago.

My former company made Phil's helmets from the 1980's until he could no longer drive, and they were painted to look like the old days. Here is one of the fittings:

At Goodwood in the 2F (I had a ride in the car, it was quite a thrill!)

And a pic of Phil in first place at the Laguna Seca Can-Am race in 1966, hounded by Surtees in the T70:

The helmet top is white of course, with black leather at the base. White visor with flat edge, smoked goggles with black rubber frames.

I hope that all of this helps.

Hard to tell, but I saw the same picture. Looked black in one photo seems to have some blue. If I had to pick one I would lean toward black.

The first wing used at Bridgehampton was indeed a very dark blue, a color also used in the cockpit. This in fact is the actual Cox model as it was modified from race to race and had a much larger wing for Laguna Seca as well as front winglets. :)

By the way, I painted the interiors dark blue, together with the top of front wings.

Great work, Jean-Michel.

I especially like the subtle way the restauration is done. They look like classic slot-cars, not artificial show-cars :-)

The Bridgehampton version of the 2E is in my opinion the most beautiful of the Chaparrals (and I am a great fan), as the later versions ver spoiled (sorry) be the addition af winglets and extensions.

Keep on with your work and continue to show us the results,

Thanks,

Beautiful cars Sir! I have a old Cox Chaparral 2E and I wish I had the talent to what you do! I may have to put it on ebay as it is I think in better condition then that one was when you got it.

Barney,
If it is the IFC "tupperware" version, they are easy to restore as new as whatever damage to the body including painted surfaces can be washed out from the polypropylene body with correct solvents.
Here is one that was badly painted in silver after I spent 3 hours to completely restore it:

cox_2e_ifc_restoration.jpg

The box is a splendid reproduction by Rodney McPherson. :)

This model was then sold on E-Pay in 2004 where it fetched an impressive $1440.00 after fierce bidding by 15 hopefuls.

No mine is the Mag chassis sidewinder 2E. You saw it serveral years ago when you had the shop. I do not have the time or talent to do it. The worse thing about it is someone (not me) painted it red! YUK!

The brake fluid will allow to strip the paint.

Beware! brake fluid will also remove the chrome. So the car has first to be dissassembled. The parts that are glued with styrene cement generally come of with white spirit.

As for the rest of the restoration, I tried to explain everything at the beginning of this topic.

on hard plastic i use liquid plumber, it will also remove the chrome. i havent had it fog glass at all. my experiance with brake fluid is it makes the plastic brittle.

Jean-Michel, I only see one mistake here. The posting should have been titled "How to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
I almost forgot! May I have it?
