HI,
I will soon learn to post some photographs for support but here a few points about the King Cobra. Mr. Shelby called the early 1960's Cooper cars "Cooper Fords" and later, the press called them King Cobra, for a nick name that caught on. In 1967 Mr. Shelby had a three car Can Am team designed by Len Terry of which Mr. Remington with Shelby American was the "constructor". Type T-10 #1, #2 and #3 were sent from England to California for completion and development. Mr. Shelby named these three cars "KIng Cobra" but the press, through an article done by Mr. Titus later and incorrectly called them a "Cougar Cobra".
The three King Cobra's were to race with a prototype Ford XE 351 block and as All American Racers (AAR) was owned by Dan Gurney and Mr. Shelby the King Cobra used AAR uprights, Eagle wheels, Eagle pieces and Gurney Weslake heads. I believe it is the only Shelby race car so equipped! The three chassis, at various stages of completion, were sent to Shelby American late in the Can AM season. The car had virtually no development and so was not to be a contender. (the XE blocks were used in the Honker and the post Le Mans GT 40 cars in Europe mid - late 1967)
As mentioned, Shelby and Ford went separate ways late in 1967 and king Cobra #3, my car, is the last Shelby American Race Car. There are the early "Cooper Fords" (King Cobra) and the "King Cobras" from the Can Am as it should be.
The brief histories of the three cars is as follows"
Chassis #1 - Was the only King Cobra raced by Mr. Shelby in Can Am. This car was powered by an XE 351 Ford, Weslake heads, Eagle suspension etc. Chassis #1 wearing #55 was raced by Titus at Riverside (3 laps) and at Las Vegas (DNS). #1 was the yellow car shown in these posts. It went off track in Vegas and was never used again and was stripped of parts and Destroyed by Mr. Titus. As a Can Am car the King Cobra was only liveried in yellow. P.S. Titus bought the wreck for $1.00
Chassis #2 Was purchased by Mr. Koslosky, then developed for racing in SCCA events. The car finally got some development time using Chevrolet power and was a successful car in the North West. Skeeter drove the car but I do not believe it ever took a Can Am grid. (I will ask Mr. Koslsky if you are interested) The only livery for the car as it raced in SCCA with Skeeter was white as shown with # 45 on it. Later it changed hands and ended up, again, in the North West and was vintage raced with different livery, first white and then as shown in this post, Gold and Dark Green. The car was crashed in the late 1980's with heavy damage to the front. It was rebuilt using my #3 as a guide for the tub, lengthened about 10 inches to fit the owner who was quite tall. The car is now in a private museum. I believe that as a SCCA race car it was only liveried in white then as a vintage car in gold and green.
Chassis #3 Was purchased by Mr. Koslosky for use if #2 was ever crashed, which it was not. The unused, unfinished #3 sat for about 20 years with him and then another 20 years with the man I purchased it from. I have the NOS tub, original XE 351 Ford block, Weslake heads, original spares from Mr. Koslosky and a number of parts from #1. Recently I found the original doors and nose ducting from #1 which will be used on my car. I intend on finishing my car yellow as #1 was finished with possibly #57 on it --- #55 #56 #57 for the last three chassis.
I will figure out the photo posting for decal location on the two cars that raced back in the day - yellow #1 and white #2.
P.S. At the front edge of the windshield on #1, between the duct openings there is a cobra decal (look at the photo, I over looked it for two years!) and on the rear centered under the air dam between the tail lights. ( the only cobra/shelby identification on the car)
Thanks, Steve
