Tex,

Just think about it for a minute.

We're talking painting "Martini Porsche" by hand, backwards in HO.

I don't think I could do it forewards in HO!

The man has some awesome talent!

Marty, the lettering is outside. So I didn't have to do it backwards. ;)

So do we think Mike McMasters is going to like his Lotus 56 Joe Leonard Indy Turbine?

The only class I know of that uses that body is the D3 F1 class. It's an Indy body. IRRA are only F1s. Other local raceways might have an Indy class but it would probably be more like the current models.

This one is for Joe Poulin with my compliments. Those that know about Joe realize he's very special and his Dad Victor is working on some retro cars for him.

Noose, I saw Joe's body this afternoon. Very nice job on the paint! Joe is as happy about receiving it, as I knew he would be. :)

The only class I know of that uses that body is the D3 F1 class. It's an Indy body. IRRA are only F1s. Other local raceways might have an Indy class but it would probably be more like the current models.

I read a book about the Lotus line. It said that the model 56 actually ran (at least) one F1 race. The AWD system was retained (to great advantage in the rain) but, after advancing convincingly through the field (did not quite lead the race), spun off course anyway at the hands of an obscure driver (obscure only because I can't remember his name). This may not have been a "points" F1 race, but it reportedly did race in F1. The turbine engine was swapped out for a Cosworth DFV, I think. The regular drivers preferred the RWD standard Lotus.

So, if this story is confirmed, this beautiful body CAN be raced in IRRA! Certainly, PdL would know!

We are forming up our "Retro Open Wheel" rules for the Rocky Mountain region races. I think the concensus on Saturday was to allow 1960's Indy and F1 bodies. If my vote counts, I hope it remains that way.

Bytheway, who makes the Foyt Coyote Eagle (just a dozen or so posts earlier)?

Keep it in the slot,

AJ

Yes, a Lotus 56 did run in F1 finally but it was 1971 thus it still would not meet the IRRA rules of pre-'70.

The Coyote above was the original Lancer one but Outisight is now making it for you Indy enthusiasts.

I had a friend email me separately to spare me the embarrassment.

You are right that the 56 didn't run in F1 until '71. Colin Chapman did make an interim F1 car that was AWD, the Type 63, an evolution of the 49. It's all covered in Wikepedia. John Miles drove the 63 in the 1969 British Grand Prix. The 56 was raced three times in 1971, by Emerson Fittipaldi in two non-points races in the UK and by Dave Walker in the Dutch Grand Prix. Lotus' AWD cars were very fast in the rain but never scored points in any Grand Prix race and were, thus, failed experiments.

It seems a stretch to allow an F1 car, essentially designed and raced in 1968, to be cut off at the ankles by the fact that it didn't race in F1 until 1971 and would be deemed illegal in a vintage race. By 1971, it would surely have sprouted front and rear wings, which are not on this body.

Keep it in the slot,

AJ

It's the 1963 Lotus 19B Pacesetter Ford. I don't know who makes the body as it was sent to me to do. It's Duffy's.
