love the JD cars too.... I have only one. If I had been the one person to initially envision retro racing 13 years ago, JD would've been the USRRC class and the more powerful anglewinders would've been the Can-Am class. Such is life. I do like the classes even as they are today. I would love to race JD cars.

Why don't you start up a jail door series, I’m sure there are enough cars out there.

Fellas,
Which one of the motors currently available would fall into the realm of the rules posted for these cars about 10 years ago here on Slotblog ...IIRC it was the TSRF motor that was the choice back then ?

Also used were Falcon 2s, which were timed in the opposite direction to which they were supposed to be, & the Slick 7 Mini Brutes. Today you'd be hard pressed to find either new, but JK sold an FK version of the Mini Brutes last I knew.

Yes the JK Hawk MB is the one. Mine is geared 8/29 with the big tires that we run on these and it flies with great brakes. They do take a long time to break in and tend to vary in speed though.

Would anyone have a file or copy of the rules that were posted here on Slotblog ? If they're still on here I can't seem to find them.

I know Pro-Track made tires for the Jail Door cars because that's what we used. I'm not sure what other manufacturer made/makes them ?

Thanks for the info Mr. Noose, that should make it easier. Now, was/is John Dilworth the only producer of the GP cars, and what about Sports car bodies ?

As for the sports cars, the Lotus 40 is by far the most popular. Essentially the Ti22 of Jail Door racing. True Scale made the best one but do not know
if they are still in business or making them any more. OS my also have a version.

Mr. Noose,
Thanks for the info on the bodies...here's a couple of bodies I had bought clear from Mr. Noose and the chassis I built under them. A challenge to drive, but lots of fun.
Both cars feature the Pro Track tires mentioned above.

Fellas,
I'll try to gather up some of the Jail Door guys from our area and see if we can come up with a field large enough to stage a race. I'm hoping that most of the cars are still in "working order" and will only require minimal work to get them underway.

Fellas,
We've now got a total of four Jail Door racers committed to a GP car race in the near future. There weren't many from here that actually built and competed with JD cars. We hope to gain one or two more from our area in hope of staging a number of events this year.
Anyone wishing to join in let us know and we'll do some more planning to hopefully get this off the ground.

I still have my jail door cars. If someone wants to participate, I'l gladly loan them my car. If it has a motor, it's one of the original mini-brutes.

Hi Pete
I just had my JD sports car on the Purple Mile track at Modelville yesterday. Was more fun than the other cars I ran on that track. I for one wish we would start racing them regularly again! There are a lot of cars out there.
Mike, Wish I could have been there to see it on the purple mile .I still have the one you did for me !!!!!

Fellas,
We're hoping to have a Jail Door GP race within the 4-6 weeks at The Race Place in Farmingdale NJ, raceway schedules permitting. We're looking at a Saturday afternoon/evening event. We have to consider RETRO EAST and PENN JERSEY as well as any other previously scheduled events in the area.
It'll be held on one of two tracks, not the high speed track. A link to the rules are posted in post #36 above. We'll have tech of some sort, we can use assistance in this area, no offer of help will be turned away.
We'd like revive the classes and run them on an intermittent basis, both GP cars AND Sports cars at some point. Any input from potential racers is more than welcome.
Thanks,

Pete It's great to get a JD race together but there are not too many GP cars out there compared to sports cars. Most found the GP cars too hard to drive.

Reading the GP rules there were a few changes that were made since those were written I believe. Pretty sure we changet the track to 3 inches for better handling. Also the motors are different now too. There is a Hawk JD motor from JK that replaces the unavailable ones in the original rules.

Mike,
We have a few JD Sports cars among us, not many though. Maybe we should have a JD day and invite both classes of cars to run, two races are better than one, right ?
I have a Sports car and there are about 2-3 others cars in our group that have them. As far as motors, I'm not sure what the others have but mine is built to the original rules with the old motor which is fine with me.
I do recall the track rule adjustment, 3 inches it'll be, thanks for the heads up Mike.

FWIW, out here on the West Coast, after a while most of the racers just got tired of the generally ill handling Jail Door cars and the attendance died as people weren't having much fun. Some cars were just awful........
In an attempt to revive the class, John Cukras proposed that we simply incorporate the clearances of the Can Am class ( .015 front and .050 rear) while keeping all the other rules the same. He built a car like this and the difference was exactly as you would expect and the car handled great and you could drive it pretty hard without deslotting! Unfortunately, by that time, we couldn't resurrect the class but I think if we started from the beginning with cars that were more fun to drive maybe things would have been different.
If I had to do it over again I would eliminate the rules that eventually made almost every car look identical and just say to basically copy the cars as pictured in the 1966 Rod and Custom race reports. Inline, no chassis movement, no piano wire except for a motor bracket brace, lower clearances, etc. The diversity of the very early scratchbuilt brass rod cars was remarkable and I think we should have tried more to copy these interesting chassis.
