I found Warmack's dual motor car, maybe he could tell the story!

Posted Image

I think he build more then one dual motor, better ask him because I have a bad memory.

Nesta

I've built several different types after seeing the speed potential on the Buena Park king track displayed by cars built by regulars John Sinz and Ken Dylke. This style of one motor in front of the other works best and was TQ and finished 2nd at the last king track race in September. A bit tricky to drive on the gutter lanes but when it is hooked up it is FAST. Obviously works best on super smooth banked tracks like the BPR Gerding King and definitely an adventure!!!

That's a cool car. I never would of thought of that arrangement.

Do you think anyone ever tried it back in the 60's?

Is that an aluminum coupling you machined with set screws to attach the motor shafts together?

Thanks :)

Rick,
Yes. A very simple aluminum coupling. The tricky part is connecting it to the virtually non existent shaft on the end bell side of the rear motor. I grind a VERY small flat on the shaft, use a 1-72 set screw and loctite it all together and hope it stays straight. The front motor box is mounted with loose tubes which allows a bit of misalignment if everything isn't perfectly straight.

I don't remember any dual motor car ever running competitively in the 60's.

The first one I made was 2 motors in the rear, just like the car you are building. It was very fast, but too tail heavy. The next one was 4 wheel drive with one motor in the front and one in the rear and much better. The latest one, except for being somewhat of an "adventure" to drive on some lanes, runs great but only on the BPR King track.

Thanks Bryan :) .

I got really lucky and scored a pair of very rare prototype RussKIT 28X (experimental) motors:

Posted Image

This is the standard "HEMI" can instead of the production RussKIT 28's fancy lad version with all the little slots instead of a rectangular hole.

What? What do you mean you're not buying it. OK, OK, you're right. I made them up from using the armature and magnets from a '68 Mabuchi...

Posted Image

...a Tradeship HEMI end bell kit...

Posted Image

...the can and hardware from an American Line HEMI motor...

Posted Image

The armatures got the shafts straightened, the comm and comm wires tied, the comm trued and cranked a bit CCW and the whole mess epoxied and static balanced:

Posted Image

So for this fantasy build, these are RussKIT 28X's ;) :

Posted Image

Time to put the roller together....

Was heat shrink tube available in the 60's  ? The wires were going everywhere so I used it here. I couldn't help myself :) .

My friend, do solder in the can bushing. Those $%U*()_{} hemi cans love to spin that bushing in the housing.

Hi Stefano,

I was able to crank the commutators a few degrees counterclockwise before I epoxied the windings. Now both motors run fastet in the same direction.

I've got the body mounted and I'm working on the details. Here's the Russkit display card that came with an original body:

Hi Rocky,

On the Hemi I built before these two I turned down a "real" bearing and soldered it in place. On these two I'm trying a drop of red Loctite on the stock bearings. When that doesn't work I'll solder in some real bearings :laugh2: .

Russkit supplied their wire wheel inserts with their body kit. I scored a small lot of them but without any knockoffs  . Here's my solution, drill and tap the inserts 5-40 and thread a set screw and Cox knockoff into the wheel insert:

Posted Image

Posted Image

The Russkit body in the picture has the body cut out to expose the motor's velocity stacks. I used Mr. Milling Machine to make up a "Lazy Man's" version. A piece of hobby shop .020" sheet plastic gets 12 neat holes drilled:

Posted Image

I found some 3/32" axle spacers (Slick7 ????).....

Posted Image

......and man that was easy :D :

Posted Image

It should look OK through the little cutouts in the body.

Hey Jairus......I'm going to paint one :shok: . That should burn me out on painting for several builds :laugh2: . I hope you're available :) .

Where's that red paint........

Crack a beer, play some classic rock (moody blues, stones, led-zep) and just enjoy yourself Rick. You are plenty talented to handle it. ;)

Hi

I like it. I never thought of your approach to the velocities in the day. But back then, we had actual cut pieces available. I don't remember WHO made them, but I still have boxes somewhere of those scale detail bits.

A couple years ago, P negotiated with a local when I was in LA for me to acquire a NOS pactra after I waxed nostalgic over the one I did in the day that has been sitting around WAITING. Sadly, still waiting!

Oh, in the day, I used those knock offs as well in the threaded axle days. I think all of mine are ex strombecker. As a kid, I just took an xacto and rotated until they would clear the axles! Of course, it was a massive waste of time in that the car wasn't faster, but the bits often got shed in the race.

I did one version of that Ferrari that did not survive in Yellow with two 26D motors. It was like this, had an aunt in the mall seeing me at a track, walk in and ask why why why, and funded a car. Just wanted to see a yellow ferrari with two motors. I STILL don't know why. Not a success.

Looks GREAT Rick. Don't know why you keep asking me to paint your cars since you do a beautiful job. ;)

Did you seal the edges of those decals?
I use Future floor wax painted around the edges to keep the darned things from pulling up. Plus it adds a bit of gloss to the otherwise dull finish of the decal.

that is amazing craftsmanship.

Noob question; how do two or even 4 motors run on a lane?
Do you need a special controller?
How does it not affect the other lanes?

some really cool stuff there.

Thanks Terry,

These old motors only draw about .6 amps at 6 volts. I use a modern controller at a battery powered commercial track so there’s no problem with dual motor cars.
