Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club News for October 12, 2013

We held our second meeting of Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club's directors. We only had responses from 2 racers to our newsletters request to give us feedback. We have a new racing schedule designed to suit our Saturday and Sunday racers. We are closing up our rules so that racers from other tracks do not feel that they are at a disadvantage racing here at ASSCC. We are going in the direction that we feel will keep us to our mission's path. No points will be kept for this racing season; however, if things go according to plan, we will have points for our next fall series in 2014. We have added some classes and changed some of our rules so please read the schedule and rules which are are these links:

http://awarenessspeedwayslotcarclub.weebly.com/racing-series.html

http://awarenessspeedwayslotcarclub.weebly.com/rules.html

We have an integrity-based, mutually respecting Club who is in the process of creating a Not-For-Profit Charity to help Special Needs Kids and their parents and their families forget that they have a disability for a little while. And we are very grateful to The Sarah Lynn Strohman Foundation and United Cerebral Palsy, not-for-profit organizations that endorse us through their programs! We are very grateful to our current members of Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club who have offered their love and encouragement in our endeavors to offer some fun-filled activities for our community.

We would like to thank our loyal racers and patrons who have stuck it out with us and will continue on with us in our ground-breaking Club and Mission.

In addition, all racers must be a ASSCC member in order to race any race effective October 12st, 2013. You may come practice and have fun for our normal non- members donation.

Schedule changes and new race announcement are below in newsletter. Please read this newsletter the whole way through. All upcoming events and racing schedules are included.

New classes were added to our rotating classes to attract more racers. Vintage Stock cars (4.5 hard body), Midgets, 360 sprints. Rules are posted on our web site.

Our community-based track is open to the public. Come put a smile on your face! And make some laps on the track.

Most people know someone in their family, their church or in the community that they want to help reach out and help them live a higher quality of life.

We also host birthday parties up to 8 kids at a time. Check us out to learn what our special friends program is about.

It's has been suggested that we start charging a hourly donation to help us reach our goal of becoming a charity. We are charging members $5.00 per person to play with cars and controllers included per visit  and non-members $12.00 per person to play with cars and controllers per visit and first visit is free for everyone.

Our goal is to raise $5,500.00 to become a charity. Becoming a charity will greatly assist those special needs programs that cannot make it to the track for various reasons including that we are not wheelchair accessible. When we are able to move our slot car track, everyone will have greater opportunities to having access to it more frequently and help us build slot car leagues, and races, etc.

Another benefit of moving our track is to allow people who love having an inexpensive birthday party have more space and allow food to be brought in instead of some of the limits we have currently.

Once we become a charity--those interested in having tax deductible opportunities—we would be able to provide tax deductions via receipts for individuals and businesses that want to be marketing partners or sponsors.

Hello Friends,

I just wanted to update everyone on our status after last nights Township Zoning Hearing Board Hearing. Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club and the township have come to a compromise that satisfies all parties involved. This would not have been possible with out the representation from Evan Pappas from Shumaker Williams P.C. and his staff. Evan represented us Pro-Bono.

Karen L. Simons-Durkish, CPA  assisted Evan with case law research while attending law school and is our CPA. Thanks you so much for believing in who we are and were we want to go and how we want to get there.

I need to thank the following people for showing up last night to address the ZHB when public comments were allowed. Rick Kauffman and our UCP friends, Kevin and Daniel and their house manager Ms. Diane Hoy who helps from behind the scene, The Burkett family sent a nice letter along with Matthew and his aid Mike. Mike and Rick addressed the board with their thoughts on our club.

I have started the changes the club needs to make for use to be compliant with the ZHB AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT AND MORE RACES.

Cheriel and I would like to thank all the people who had us in their prayers and thoughts for the correct out come.

Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club will continue on with our mission and goals. I plan on having web site fully updated by the end of the week. Check it out to find out about our new programs.

Thank You

Rodney Stuber

President ASSCC

Hello friends,

I just wanted to update everyone on our newest fund raiser.
We have launched our biggest fund raiser to date to raise funding to support our club's mission and goals.

Please share our posts/emails with friends and family to help us reach as many people as possible so we may be able to raise the funds needed to continue putting smiles on the faces of our special friends.

Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club is dedicated to continue on with our mission and goals.

We have been asked why we don't post pictures of our special friend weekly activities. We are bound by privacy rules for each group that comes to use our facility. We will be doing a new video of our program with one of our special friends to show how our safety and educational programs work including how we operate our special friends track time.

We just introduced a new challenge for our special friends. This challenge is 1 hr lap total records for each lane this challenges our special friends to keep the cars on the track and set goal to beat the record for their lane. This will challenge them to use mathematical skills to keep track of their laps and how many they need to get the record for that lanes lap total.

Thank You

Rodney Stuber

President ASSCC

Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club Testimonials.

Dear Mr. Stuber:

It was such a happy day when we were introduced to your program. The four gentlemen of Lisburn Group Home all have serious handicaps that prevent them from ever being able to make the split second decisions needed to drive a car and absorb the driving laws of the State of Pennsylvania. They are all very big NASCAR fans and have a driving passion to watch the races on television. Finding your program gave them an outlet for their dreams and was an empowerment for them. It was love at first green light with the GO! They get a tremendous amount of joy visiting your program as it makes them feel like they are driving.

The Lisburn Group Home used to be a co-ed facility in 2007 we switched to an all male facility. The gentlemen of Lisburn were used to being the alpha male and center of attention in their family homes. They had a tremendous amount of difficulty adapting to having to share the attention of staffing, waiting their turn, communicating without violence  and  socializing appropriately. Your program was a bonus that it allowed them an opportunity to be competitive with each other, it allowed someone to win, challenge and be aggressive in a healthy and acceptable manner. They felt just like their heroes of NASCAR.

Your program created social opportunities for them to be real men, just another guy racing against “normal” gentlemen such as yourself and my male staffing. You were all on even terms. It was an amazing opportunity in a world that focuses so much negative on disabilities. It gave them a chance to exercise their communication and socialization skills with a small group setting. They were still sharing with others, they practiced their manners, they had positive interaction and they had an opportunity to resolve some of their problems and conflicts and build problem solving skills. Along with those skills they also learned to develop a bond of trust and stability. These gentlemen come from a field where people go in and out their doors so frequently that they no sooner get attached than their staffing moves on. It is a difficult position for them and having the stability you and your wife provided was a huge emotional plus for them.

My gentleman who is legally blind in one eye and uses a walker was learning how to use his eye hand coordination to keep the car on the track and watch it as it flew around the turns. He was also working his gross and fine motor skills squeezing the trigger to propel and adjust the speed of the car. For my bi-polar gentleman it was an opportunity to learn about his feelings of excitement when the car is cruising along well, the frustration of having it fly off the track or lose speed and crash. He had a lot of exhilaration when he managed to race it faster than the other cars. He was learning to label his feelings, accept how they felt, and it was an opportunity to have a positive release of all those feelings he doesn’t truly understand. Just releasing the normal masculine tension is very helpful for him.

My gentlemen who has kinesthetic disorder was finding it acceptable to have to wait his turn, wait until the roadway was clear, accept when he could not be the number one driver, etc. My autistic gentleman was thrilled with spending time with you and your wife and bonding to your attention. You have both been so very gracious and kindhearted to him and that means more to him than every dollar he has in the world.

Your slot car racing was a terrific hobby and a phenomenal, exciting mix of a wide variety of  recreational and leisure skill building for this group of gentlemen of assorted ages.  The fact that you have worked so hard to keep it an inexpensive activity that they could afford was an amazing positive. It also helped them with working their financial skills as they paid for the time they used the track and adjusted their cash boxes here at the group home accordingly.

This house manager knows how hard you have worked to establish your charity the last several years. We also hope to eventually bring more of our UCP residents and friends to your racing club. It would give them more opportunities to make friends with the CPARC group that you had become involved with.

Sincerely,

Ms Diane Hoy

UCP Lisburn Group Home Manager

Debbie Burkett

2/11/14

I am a mother of a 21 year old son on the Autism Spectrum.  Since
Matthew first saw the track, he has been excited to participate in the
process.

The benefits for our son have helped him to be more engaged with others
peers.  Since Matthew always has been more interested in communicating
with adults, having this interactive social activity encourages
communication with other young adults and teens.  Also, since Matthew
likes to spend money and is very impulsive with anything to do with
purchasing, there is a wonderful incentive to purchase and earn the next
fastest car.   This experience gives the opportunity to work toward a
goal of saving, delaying gratification, and working on money skills for
the goal to purchasing a 'faster' car.

Matthew's impulsiveness has benefited when needing to control the speed of
the vehicle especially around the corners.  This has an immediate
consequence if he gets too fast with getting the car off the track, and
therefore delaying the process of racing.  Learning to control impulse
with an immediate consequence is essential for learning. This also
provides the need for hand and eye coordination.  The need to keep track
of your vehicle among the others on the track, being aware of how fast
the car is going in relation to the other vehicles also is imperative
for the racing environment.

We are so thankful for this opportunity to assist Matthew in his learning maturity process.

Deborah Burkett

Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club would like to advise everyone that we are now officially a 501.©3 charity. I just received the determination letter from the I.R.S. We are now the only slot car club in the USA that is an official 501.©3 charity designated for intellectually disabled and special needs adults and children.  This designation makes all donations eligible for a tax deduction when filing your yearly tax returns. We would like to thank everyone who is supporting us on our journey.. Our next goal is to raise the funds necessary to move our track to a public setting that will enable more of our special friends to have greater access to our track and exciting educational and safety programs .

Our new 501.©3 status makes all of our fund raising racers entry donations this year and future entry donations a tax deduction for the year.

Thank you

Happy Holidays from Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club!

We have some EXCITING updates for the 2014/2015 season which include:

We became a 501. © 3 charity in October which now makes all donations, memberships, sponsorships an eligible tax deduction.

ASSCC is in the process of having an updated video of our programs. This video should be done in early 2015. Why this is so exciting is for people who like to watch “live-action racing plus it gives people a better picture of what kinds of programs we offer!

Starting January 1, 2015 we are bringing back our memberships to help raise the funds needed to achieve our future goals. Please wait until January 1st  or after to obtain your 2015 membership.

Please go to our web site to read our goals and three types of memberships.

http://awarenessspee...lubs-goals.html

http://awarenessspee...emberships.html

Memberships will be required to use our club and participate in our fund raising activities starting January 1, 2015

Membership sponsors are needed to cover the cost of memberships for some of our special friends groups who have no funds allotted to pay for a group/home membership.  The exciting part of being a Membership Sponsor is that you receive FREE advertising which help you grow your business, plus it will be a great tax deduction!

We have been growing slowly as a club and have partnered with UCP Adult Group Homes, CPARC, The Autism Society - Greater Harrisburg Area Chapter to connect to families and local adult services. The only time the public is invited is when we have our fund raising races at our track or a private date is scheduled to have fun.

Our educational and safety programs are tailored for the intellectually disabled and special needs adults and children. These programs are available to our special friends and members.

ASSCC Really needs your help in raising the funds to achieve our goals and expanding our programs to reach more people.

To donate please visit our donation page on our website. http://awarenessspee...tion-links.html

Warm regards,

Rodney Stuber President

ASSCC had our first fund raising race of 2015 last night 2-7-2015 and it was a blast to be here racing and supporting our club and its mission.  The biggest surprise last night was we have a racer that has only raced four times in her life and was setting track records and running for the win in a couple classes. Great Job Michele!!!!

ASSCC discussed with our racers last night and contacted our other racers/donors with e-mail about how to make our racing fund raiser racing better and attract more racers to support our clubs mission and we have come up with some changes. Thank You for your continued support.

ASSSCC Fund Raising 2-7-2015 Race Results

ASSCC racing is very close due to we run a little slower motor in some classes that puts the driver back into the race results not the motor. If you crash it’s real hard to make up your lost laps due to the cars all being so close on lap times.

Creek View Challenge Results 5-16-15

Awareness Speedway’s track was spray glued for our creek view challenge. We had five racers in the pits tonight for a fun filled night of racing.

First up were the 360 sprints, which was a fast fun filled race with the race actually coming down to how often you crashed and lost laps.

1st  Rodney 194

2nd Jeff        190

3rd Jason      182

4th Cheriel    167

5th Michele   165

CIMG1035-M.jpg

Up next were the mighty modified’s. This race was very fast paced with many segment racers racing as hard as they could and running side by side. This race came down to how often you crashed which tonight was a common thing and lost laps. Tonight must have been off night do to the amount of crashes that took place.

1st   Rodney 232

2nd  Jeff    227

3rd  Cheriel  221

4th  Jason     201

5th  Michele 185

Up next were the midgets, which were not a handful tonight, all racers learned from the last race to feather their car and loosen the car up with some subtle adjustments. The racing was very good and close.

ASSCC is very grateful to General Manger James at TGI Fridays who recently gave us some very wonderful door prizes. It is wonderful knowing that he supports what we do, encourages, and supports our mission to help intellectually disabled, medically challenged & special needs adults and children in a new, activity that has therapeutic and behavioral benefits, while providing fun activities! We hope to attract more slot car racers or people* who want to learn a new activity to support our club by attending our next race to be held on July 25, 2015. Please help support us by attending a race and become eligible for awesome door prizes too! The TGI Fridays that I just referenced is located in Chambersburg, PA
*Contact track to arrange practice time.

Awareness Speedways special friends program is moving forward with tremendous results. Our special friends have excelled at beating their lap records almost every time they run on the track. ASSCC keeps rotating cars until we find a car that our special friends excel with while coaching and mentoring our special friends. While everyone is having fun while chasing the lap record for their lane. We are going to start advancing the voltage to challenge our special friends to continue to set lap records. This will force our clients to adjust to the change presented, in the slot car being faster, handle different and the controller responding quicker do to higher voltage.

To accomplish laps including a lap record on our track it involves many challenges and benefits for our participants:

  • Therapeutic benefits (eye hand coordination, motorization skills, cognitive skills, assessment skills, communicate with officials and other members of the group as to when they wreck the car they are running so power is turned off as to not cause any more cars to crash, etc)
  • Behavioral benefits (socialization skills ,fellowship, feel safe in a competitive group setting, must have good attitude during the week to be able to participate in the groups scheduled event, etc)

ASSCC has other unique programs for special needs adults and children.

  • Specialized educational programs
  • Specialized safety programs
  • Most importantly, every one looks forward to getting together with the staff of ASSCC to feel like family while having fun as an individual or in a group setting.

Because:

Every person deserves a place of acceptance.
Every person deserves a place to play and learn a new skill.
Every person deserves a place to win and achieve goals.
Every person deserves a place to laugh, smile and make new friends
Every person deserves to be treated with respect.
Every person deserves a place to be accepted just as they are.

ASSCC 2015-2016 News Letter

1-1-16
Our Shiremanstown CPARC group had their last visit in August. This visit would be their last visit until ASSCC is able to relocate and set back up. Sarah had a awesome night. Sarah smashed her lane record of accomplishment. Way To Go Sarah!!! Joe had a great night and added to his amazing lap record of accomplishment. Way To Go Joe!!! Keith was having a good night just missing yellow lane lap record of accomplishment by 1 lap!!!. Rick S. had a awesome night!!! Rick S smashed his lane record of accomplishment. Way To Go Rick S!!! All lap totals were up due to less de-slots and crashes taking place. Way To Go Everyone!!!!!

ASSCC was coaching everyone on keeping his or her car fast and not De-slotting. We all had great conversations, fun and took our group picture with our cutouts. It was a very sad ending to a great night when we had to explain why were closing down our program portion of our club. The emotions went from anger to tears.

UCP had their last visit in August. This visit would be their last visit until ASSCC is able to relocate and set back up. Kevin was having a great run up on his favorite lane, which is red with no self-caused de-slots. WOW!!!! Daniel was running on his favorite blue lane and having a great time!

Rick K was on black lane chasing the lane record of accomplishment and just missed it..

Our program manager was coaching everyone on keeping his or her car fast and not De-slotting. We raised the voltage this week for UCP to add to the challenge. We all had great conversations, fun and took our group picture with our cutouts. It was a very sad ending to a great night when we had to explain why were closing down our program portion of our club. The emotions went from anger to tears.

Awareness Speedways special friends program was moving forward with tremendous results. Our special friends have excelled at beating their lap record of accomplishment almost every time they run on the track. The program manager keeps rotating cars until we find a car that our special friends excel with while coaching and mentoring our special friends on how to go fast and keep their car in the slot. Everyone is having fun chasing the lap record of accomplishment for his or her lane. We advanced the voltage to challenge our special friends to continue to set lap records of accomplishment. This has forced our clients to adjust to the change presented, slot car being faster, handling different and the controller responding quicker do to higher voltage.

ASSCC started out 2015 with high hopes of taking our club to the next level. It was apparent very early on in 2015 that the support or services that had been promised by slot car racers, vendors, prospective clients that did not come through after all.

We heard every excuse possible.
#1 "We don't understand what you are doing and how it benefits people."  Check out our YouTube link that will give you a visual trial run:  https://www.youtube....ORiV-R0w1VobySw

#2 "Life got in the way."  Yes it can when you allow it to.  Surely you know someone in your community who has special needs.  The Great News is that you can do something right now!  Here are some choices:  You can contribute by visiting our website at You can contribute your time, participate by following us on Twitter and Facebook and liking us.  You can also send positive thoughts our way which will greatly be appreciated!

#3 ”A hobby and charity don't mix."  That is how Bill Gates started Microsoft by tinkering as a hobby in his garage and look where he is right now!  Of course, we are combining a sport which is seeing a decline, but we are also a great hobby and now a charity that supports the local chapters of Special Needs in our area!  Please help us spread the word that we are here to offer fun activities as an alternative to sitting around doing nothing.  Plus we may be able to offer a possible tax deduction!

This is just the top three of many excuses. ASSCC was formed with the promise that no tax dollars ( grants) would be used. I will not change my promise. Our programs are suspended until we move to a new location in 2016.

We have some very dedicated vendors, financial supporters, service providers and donors that without your support we would not have even made it this far in our journey. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

We hope to have the club's programs back up and running in late 2016.

We are still accepting your possible tax deductible contributions to help ease the financial burden on the founders of ASSCC who have mostly supported and purchased all equipment for the club using their own financial resources.  Please visit our web site for more information on how to support our club. http://awarenessspeedwayslotcarclub.weebly.com/videos--how-to-support-asscc.html

Thank You
Rodney Stuber President of ASSCC

ASSCC Holiday Newsletter

12-9-17

Awareness Speedway Slot Car Club wishes our supporters a very happy holiday season and a Merry Christmas.

ASSCC track is in our new location in Newport, Pa.. The owners of the track and new location are in the process of doing electrical upgrades for the track and equipment. Our goal is to be back up and offering our special friends program early in 2018. Please keep us in your positive thoughts and prayers to have our re-setup upgrades go very smooth.

Awareness Speedway Slot Car Clubs board of directors would like to announce changes for 2018 and forward. ASSCC will no longer promote or sanction any competitive racing. We will host outside series, clubs, benefit events, track owner races at our facility for a donation to ASSCC.

Awareness Speedways special friends program was moving forward with tremendous results. Our special friends have excelled at beating their lap record of accomplishment almost every time they run on the track. Everyone was having fun chasing the lap record of accomplishment for his or her lane. We advanced the voltage to challenge our special friends to continue to set lap records of accomplishment. This has forced our clients to adjust to the change presented, slot car being faster, handling different and the controller responding quicker do to higher voltage. We had to temporary stop our special friends program at the track in late 2015.

We are still accepting your tax deductible contributions to help ease the financial burden of setting our club back up and purchasing some new equipment for our special friends program.

I conducted motor test to find suitable motors to replace the FK versions we ran that are no longer available.(Evil 9,Demon, MB2) We are slowing some classes down to have better racing by putting it in the racers hands and not all about the motors.

I ran these motors to test JK Hawk 25 Motor - JK-303025,  JK Products Hawk MB Motor JK-MBPlafit Cheetah IV Motor - PLF-8631D.,   Proslot Scorpion Poly-Neo FK Motor - PS-4007, Proslot Euro MK-1 Motor - Sealed - PS-4002FK.

We will be using the JK Hawk MB motor in most of our classes that used the Slick 7 Mini Brute 2 motors. These JK-MB motors are the replacement for the MB2. They are very close in speed to the MB2. I still have Slick 7 MB2 motors available.

We will be using the Plafit Cheetah IV Motor - PLF-8631D in  some classes.

We will be allowing the Pro Slot Scorpion Poly-Neo FK Motor - PS-4007, Pro Slot Euro MK-1 Motor - Sealed - PS-4002FK motors in a couple classes that are going to be our fast classes that used the Evil9, Demon, Falcon motors. The 4007 is essentially the same as the 4002fk except it has a American made arm.

The JK Hawk 25 Motor - JK-303025 just wouldn't be a good motor for us. I ran it in a midget and even with changing pinions couldn't get it up to speed to deslot on the upper three lanes. We will not be using this motor.

We will be adding some old motors back in the racing.  Any 16D (not super) motor will be allowed as long as the arm is .530" diameter or less, no shimming of the magnets, no shunts. This allows us to use up old motors that are in our box.

It would be possible to only have to purchase a Plafit Cheetah IV Motor - PLF-8631D  to be current with the rule changes if you have spare motors in your box.

I will be updating our rules to reflect which motors will be in each class. Changes will be highlighted in yellow. Rules are posted on website with download link.

Want to run at least once a month possibly with enough support twice on Saturdays early evening from November to March possibly April. This will be for fun and run by C&R Speedway (ASSCC).

Our programs are available by appointment only at this time. Use contact page to find different ways of arranging program time.
