Very nice work Rick and Rodney.

I weighed my car with all  parts, and the engine is heavy, its weight is 141 g.

If it is not a secret Rick, your car weighs balsa how?

I've shipped the car off to Rodney for testing. I'll ask him he can weight it or I will when I get it back.

This car keeps getting better...a great read, follow and learn type thread.

Those halibrand wheel inserts look great.

I like to mount the body with two posts at the front and one in the rear as you have done Rick.

Some cars are the other way round, which for some reason I find less effective

I have to admit that Rodney "schooled" me on that. I would have done it the other way around! :dash2: :laugh2:

Live and learn :)

I've got the car renumbered to 14 so one of our Slotforum pals can run his #4 Indy roadster. I added a little color to the car too:

Hopefully Rodney can test it this Sunday......

Hi Régis,

My cars weight is 6.6 oz or 187.1 grams:

weight3.jpg

Rodney took her to Eddie's Slot Car World Sunday. Here she is being unloaded from the transport:

testdayEddies.jpg

There she met up with the two "test cars", number 3 and 13:

Testday2.jpg

I couldn't be more pleased with the track test. It's a far cry from my first outing with too big and sticky rear tires and too light a chassis. Here's Rodney's track report:

Your chassis design allowed the weight to be low.  The car reacts quick to transitions and also allows for smooth driving.  You just gllide from turn to turn.  Like driving a flexi car.  I noticed your car had the front wheels slightly raised in relation to the guide flag.  Cox guide flags are the best screw guides.

The drop arm and chassis behaved together as a unit.  With some cars, the car wants to tilt and the drop arm exasperated this condition?  Not with your car.

The overall weight of the cars is not bad.  Kind of where I guessed them to be.

Rodney

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A nice smooth and easy to drive car! That's what I'd hoped for. Time to build Rodney's car for the Proxy...the Bass Wood Car: Rodney gave his car a bit of a bass wood beef up on the fenders and she's a beauty:

CarNumber4-082.jpg

I'm going to duplicate as best I can my chassis so I'll just show a few pictures of the progress:

CarNumber4-086.jpg

The rear end and gearing are done:

CarNumber4-089.jpg

Onward :)

Man Regis, that museum quality work there :good: Amazing!

Thanks Matt and Don. I'm looking forward to getting Rodney's No.3 "Bass Wood" car up on that transporter of his. Here's the latest progress on his chassis. The drop arm with the weight "nested" over the sides of the arm and the down stop rod fit into a V-groove cut into the weight:

It's ready for the frame rails:

More progress on Rodneys No.3 car. Next up was about 4 hours of machining on the rear wheels and inserts (or less than an hour for Duffy in a real machine shop :laugh2: ).

This is what I ended up with. In the middle is the re-machined Russkit wheel and below it a wheel insert made from an Ulrich O-ring - 1/16" axle front wheel:

CarNumber4-110.jpg

On the left is a stock Russkit Drag wheel and on the right is a K&B wheel. I think that K&B wheel looks cool so I copied the dimensions of it to modify the middle wheel using my little Sherline lathe:

CarNumber4-105.jpg

Messing around with this little lathe is really fun. Here are the steps I used (yours may vary :) ):

Turn the flange OD's to .710:

CarNumber4-096.jpg

Reduce the front bead height from .030 to .015:

CarNumber4-097.jpg

Punch a .250 hole .050 deep with an endmill to clear the back of the soon to be Ulrich wheel insert:

CarNumber4-098.jpg

Bore out the wheel ID from .530 to .600. Polish it up with a Scotch Brite pad and some metal polish and it's done:

CarNumber4-100.jpg

The Ulrich O-ring front wheels gets its OD turned to fit the modified Russkit wheel:

CarNumber4-101.jpg

That big honk'n nose cone get cut back as far as possible:

CarNumber4-102.jpg

Lastly it's tapped 5-40 to accept a set screw and a knock-off:

CarNumber4-103.jpg

Paul's Slot Car Shop urethane K&B Stock Car Special repop tires finish it off:

CarNumber4-111.jpg

Time to finish off the frame..................

Thanks Paul :)

Here's Rodney's finished roller:

CarNumber4-117.jpg

The gears are 64 pitch Weldun and run smooth as glass. The rear axle is a Parma riding in ball bearings. The motor got a fresh zapping that increased it gauss reading about 25%. It draws .42 amps at 6 volts and after a hour of running was only warm to the touch.

Gotta love those Pittman DC-65X's! :)

CarNumber4-114.jpg

The guide is a Cox and the lead wires are thin Slick7 that look a lot like the old Marklin train wire used in the day.

CarNumber4-115.jpg

When the JB Weld on the body mount post cures I can post pictures of the finished car less the driver.....

Wow what a piece of four wheeled model art! Beautiful looking complete chassis Rick :)

Have got a non "X" DC65 is it hard to find the x 6v version? Also what sort of gear ratio is good to run the DC65 at?

Got hold of the Pittman motor bolted to one of the dynamic cast motor brackets from a dynamic junk lot on evilpay and have been wanting to put it together.

Hi Paul,

The 6V motors show up on Ebay from time to time. EJ's Hobbies has (last time I checked) 6V armatures for $5 if you want to swap out a 12V. For a gear ratio, I've been running about 4:1 with 1 1/8" tires. I think the 65 makes a really fun vintage car :)

Thanks for the info Rick, will check out EJ's to see if they have any. Will also look for some of the weldun 64 pitch gears as they look neat & sound like they mesh really well .

You bet Paul. The Weldun gears are amazing. They work with modern Sonic 64P pinions too. The only down side is you have to open them up for larger motor shaft sizes.

WE'VE GOT WOOD! :D

Here's Rodney's Team California Special all finished except for the driver and steering wheel that Rodney will add to the body he hand carved:

CarNumber4-118.jpg

CarNumber4-119.jpg

The neato vintage Ulrich Halibrand wheels (used on a lot of American race cars in the 50's and 60's) fitted with vintage K&B Goodyear tires on the front.....

CarNumber4-121.jpg

....and the same Ulrich wheel cut down into an insert and fitted into modified Russkit Dragster set screw rear wheels. The tires are urethane repops of K&B rear Goodyear Stock Car Specials. They are from Pauls Slot Cars of Canada and available on Ebay. We're using the harder compound (not his soft XPG) to help avoid "tilting" with these top heavy bodies and light space frame chassis:

CarNumber4-122.jpg

Here are our Team cars together:
