...the car managed to take the bank at full speed...

HOLY SMOKES JAIRUS! :shok: Cojones muy grande! :laugh2:

I spun out and de-slotted a vintage car on the bank at Eddie's on his Blue King....ONCE. As the car slowly rolled down toward the inside of the bank I realize there was no inside guard rail. It was as if it happened in slow motion as it made its way off the track and onto the concrete floor. :dash2:  :dash2:  :dash2:

That's a beautiful car you've got there Jairus. Like they say on TV, "be careful out there".  :victory: :)

Thanks Rick. :sun_bespectacled:

After getting home I notice that the Cox guide also didn't fit the tongue very tightly allowing the guide to tilt side to side. That's bad and probably contributed to the popping out of the slot.

However, the Dynamic guide fit so tightly that I needed to very lightly open up the hole in the tongue.

NOW the guide spins smoothly with no wobble!
So... time to go back to the track Thursday... which is also NASCAR night.  Yah! :good:

1 1/16" front and 1 1/4" rear which are as scale in appearance to the Maserati 250f as possible.

1.25 diameter wheels? I would think they would be more like .708 We're talking just wheels here not tires.

Okay people. After swapping the Cox guide with a vintage Champion guide I ran another 15 laps tonight.  MUCH BETTER!  But, it was a different track that had a lot of glue on it so the car couldn't "shoot the curl" this time.  In fact... it sort of tipped and rolled over instead of sliding out in the turns.

However, it is much easier to drive, and soon as the Ortmann tires get here I'll try another run.

(Note to self, make sure Fangio's head is on good and solid!)

Quick update, the driver is assembled and the body ready for a coat of red paint.

Actually.... I already started spraying paint, but no pics yet.
Got the Orttman tires installed but have yet to test.

Well, finally got everything painted!
Took most of the day today to detail the exterior and shoot some clear-coat to seal it all up. But I think the results were worth it.

Since Tamiya clear is no longer available here in the states, I went with Model Master Enamel top coat. Always had good luck with it in the past. That is as long as you don't mind the 7 days the paint needs to fully cure.

IMG_1188-vi.jpg

Should be able to wet sand and re-coat the body in a few days, and then.... final assembly!  Whoo-hoo!

I'm at work and can't really do a proper search(security!), but this would be an appropriate time/place to plug in that on-board video of a Fangio practice session... WONDERFUL stuff! He is just so calm and collected as he throws that beast around at speed.

All your efforts show well Jairus, excellent result! I like the way that Testors clear flowed out too, smooth and glossy. Definitely worth the wait :)

Just for reference, I have found that the clear lacquers that come with European car factory touch-up paint kits for their two-stage paint colors are a good alternative to Tamiya clear lacquer. They are good old fashioned lacquers with no stinking Government intervention! I've been using them for years, stumbled onto to them mainly because I did a factory stock static model and needed a perfect match, and by working at the Dealer came across loads of it for free to boot.

This is the brand I've had very good results with, either straight out of the can, decanted or from the bottle. I also used it on the Mercedes, right over Patto's Place decals with no ill effects what so ever...

lacquers 002.JPG

I would think any BMW, Mercedes or other premium European cars selling two stage touch-up paints in the USA have similar systems. What kind of car do you drive? You may have some in the glove box right now :D

Nothing shiny every comes near it and the glove box has only 8-tracks and gloves in it.

I couldn't either Martin!

That's why after lunch I installed the wheel inserts and took a couple pics. LOVE the way those BWA inserts look. Vintage goodness....

IMG_1195-vi.jpg

Sorry for the crappy photos.

Here is the reason I hate how the paint turned out:

IMG_1196-vi.jpg

Two huge dust motes landed on my beautiful clear-coat just after I shot the paint. Right on the nose above the number, see them? Been waiting days for the paint to cure so I can wet sand the whole thing and take another shot at it.

This may be the video Tex referred to:

Vintage Juan Manuel Fangio onboard camera Monaco

It is fabulous the Maestro in a Lancia Ferrari at Monaco in color and with slow motion. Fangio narrates it in spanish.

Enjoy!

That's not the one I was thinking of, but ANY video of Fangio sawing at the wheel is fantastic. The one I was thinking of is in black and white and I think it's at a test track. No music in that one; sorry.

Update:
Maserati 250f is now 99% complete.  I believe I have spent as much time assembling and detailing this driver/cockpit as was spent building the front axle! And that's the primary reason I got out of building static model cars in the first place, because there is always something MORE one can do to add details.

But I have to draw the line somewhere and so I believe the cockpit is done.  Still need to make and install a grill screen in the nose and add the distinctive fuel tank straps... but tonight I am taking the car down to Pelican Park Raceway to meet with the guys and give them a chance to drive the car around the track.
In three weeks I'll post my mailing address and I'll ask all entries be mailed in, so pass on the word.

IMG_1212-vi.jpg

Steering wheel kit came like this by the way:
IMG_0826-vi.jpg
I think it's a scale couple inches too big. But too late now to change to something else.
