Painted and installed a new TrueScale body on a friends Classic Stinger chassis today.
The chassis is near mint, containing only a few sight scratches and incorrect spinner nuts. It also has the less seen 26D motor carrier.

Most of you are now yelling at the screen saying that Classic NEVER made a blue Stinger. Well... that is what the customer wanted so that is what he got.

The decals are something I created at the sign shop where I work part time. They are die-cut and I modified the "shield" logo to match the blue body. The #16 and slightly wider stripe are concessions of mine to replicate more closely the box art seen below.

As for TrueScale's body... it took a touch of modification to make it fit correctly. I have talked to Victor a few times and he is mounting one of his own bodies to confirm, but it may lead to a slightly modified mold in order to make this a simple cut and drop-on mounting.

But then these cars never went together that well from the factory. I should know... I owned one and that body didn't fit either!

Since the car came to me without the wing... I had no recourse but to make a counter weight from chassis lead and stick it to the wing. Double-sided super sticky tape was used instead of unsightly rivets.... which I have thus far been unable to replicate anyway.

I think it looks pretty BOSS!

And the wing works smoothy.

That blue looks superb, Jairus.  Really shows off the lines of the car and makes for a better overall look than the original color, IMO.  Excellent job.  :good:

 

That car would look good in a metallic black or grey also.

I had a bit of trouble fitting it to the chassis, so he said he'll try to cut and fit one himself to see where mods might be required on the master if need be.

Always loved the look of the Stinger! Ever since seeing the advert in an old slot magazine was thingie love at first sight LOL.

 

Great job on the mounting and painting of the body! Looks awesome.  :D

Classic never offered a built blue Stinger inside the RTR box, but anyone could buy the factory-trimmed, ready to mount BODY KIT in blue, then buy the wing (sold separately on a card), and assemble them to a chassis that had a damaged orange body to be discarded.

It's a bit like the Cox Cheetah IFC with any other body color than red, those were assembled from effectively, spare parts.

The Classic Stinger or any other Classic body kits never had the stripes, numbers or shields. Also, the body kits were only produced either unpainted (like the Manta Ray body) or painted in only three metallic colors: blue, green or dark red. The Stinger II (with no separate wing) was also sold in clear or painted form. So there are light metallic blue, red and green Stinger body kits, with matching wings.

 

Almost all Stingers genuine RTR models were painted in metallic tangerine and all those had the FT36D (CM360) motor. From early 1967, an extra motor bracket for the FT26D (can-side drive) motor was added in each box, as well as a sticker on the display tray to make customers aware that the loose bit under the tray was just that.

Below are a Stinger II body in blue and a Stinger body in green. Both sans stickers, meaning that they are genuine body kits and not from RTR models. All these body kits had slits die-punched on their sides for mounting around the protrusions on the chassis sides:

There were a few GREEN Stingers RTR fitted with FT26D motors assembled and sold in the last days of the company (with stripes and shields), but we have never run across a genuine blue or red example so far, meaning wearing the genuine stripes and shields. Until one shows up that is undeniably genuine, I guess we have to conclude that there were none produced.

I'm glad we have a Stinger thread.

 

I have an original Orange to post and refer to. I'll have to take some pictures. The origin ... eBait .. it is in the wooden box shown below.

Never raced yet alone held a Stinger before , does the rear wing/spoiler actually work that good?

Will keep an eye out for the TrueScale one to reappear , really like the shape & would look good on a scratch Thingie chassis :D

The wing does indeed pop up and down depending on motor torque.  Power on and the wing retracts. Breaking and the wing pops up.

Whether it actually has any effect on handling is purely conjecture.

But driving mine (which I sold a few years ago) the wing got a bit on my nerves popping up and down so often.  If I had one to play with again I'd install some sort of dampener on the works so it'll slow the action down and not seem so frantic.

The original Stinger are orange with the CM360 motor. Here are some old pics I had in file, I need to take better ones.

First, here is the box next to the original artwork by Bob Cadaret:

The tires color match the body color. For example, the rare green Stingers had green tires.

But driving mine (which I sold a few years ago) the wing got a bit on my nerves popping up and down so often.  If I had one to play with again I'd install some sort of dampener on the works so it'll slow the action down and not seem so frantic.

I thought the wing on the Stinger worked by the pendulum effect of the weighted wing. The Cox 2E wing works by motor torque, but I thought the Stinger, and the spoiler on Monogram's Chap 2D both worked by the weighted pendulum.

Actually, a few were assembled by the works at the very end of the company in early 1968. The only ones that we can qualify of genuine that we have seen (withing the hundreds we have seen over the years) have green bodies. BUT, since both brackets came in the box since the second quarter of 1967, anyone could switch to a CM450, CM460 or CM470, since all they had to do is to acquire a Classic pinion right off the shelf of their retailer. Almost all the Stingers with a FT26 motor I have seen did not have the "right" pinion, meaning that the customer put the motor in the car and not the works.

Jarius and Dok,

 

       Here are 2 red Stingers from my collection. Both are factory painted and found this way. I have

 

had the clear Roadster body in the kit . but I found this Red car built and it matches the Red

 

paint from the standard Stinger. I will let you be the judge to see if these were production  models.

 

  Both bodies are both yellowed and look to be from the same era. Were these bodies sold

 

seperately??
