George,
You are not alone; the two-piece motor box was a popular alternative for many builders, including pro builders like TonyP.
Others solved the problem by not using any motorbox at all.
Without question it is for me the bending tool and the precise bends it can form that makes the one-piece motorbox a practical reality; without it I too might be building with two-piece motor boxes.

Actually Steve is a master at the precise bending of components. He has helped me in my projects by bending up a small stash of motor boxes. 
Left to my own devises, I do use a 2-piece motor box

Barely, but yes, it does.
And that is with both the guide and the drop arm in stock form.
