Model Car & Racing was another decent slot car magazine that wasn't published very long. What's become of the relatively current magazine that was being published in Hawaii?

The guy ripped a bunch of us off.. Took our money, sent out a few issues most way late, sob stories on how the costs have gone up, working with printers, don't feel good, yada yada yada.. A few here did the stories and articles and I'm guessing never was paid. But I don't know that for sure.  I even paid him $100 as a few others did for a lifetime sub to help bail him out to print the next issue. He vanished to Hawaii to live happily every after. Guys on a model car forum had the same problem, paid only to have him vanish without so much as a sorry..

No one was paid for articles from my knowledge. I know I donated the first but never received anything for the other one so that was it for me.

I recently received his newest Model Car magazine which has an additional excuse why there has been no magazines published. Plus about 6 months ago I received invoices for Slot magazine I never got. SMH

He vanished to Hawaii to live happily every after.

IIRC, he always was in Hawaii.

The best part, was in his explanation why everything was screwed up, was that it was partly due to living in Hawaii sucks some of  your ambition out of you.

Translated "I live in Paradise, with the money you sent me, and you live somewhere else, not as nice, magazineless." LOL

I bought the first issue from PCH. I wanted to see that magazine published on a regular schedule for a year before buying a subscription. I didn't see that, so I never subscribed.

You guys do not know the whole story.

Gregg's father-in-law just passed.  The old guy had dementia and Gregg took care of him feeding and changing adult diapers for over a year.
Not to mention, our lead lay-out artist Harry passed last year of cancer.

And, of course, Gregg's back surgery.

I suggested Gregg sell the mags to someone else, but he said no.

So... feel lucky you got anything in 2020.

Jairus... Thanks for the info, but in reality we can add that to the list of his excuses.

We paid money, he was excessively late with the few issues we did receive from the start with zero commination from him until members raised enough cane to get him to reply. And just guessing his replies was probably prompted by you or someone else. He didn't step up, he had to be pushed. And then his replies were always something similar to what you posted, just a different excuse. We haven't seen an issue in months and months, but once again, no communication, zero explanation and of course no apology for taking folks money and not honoring his word or commitment. He just vanished.

For me personally. It was just $100, I considered it gone long ago. From slot cars to Indy Cars I've had bad business deals, this was a cheap, one another lesson learned.

Jairus, I appreciate you coming to bat for him, but sorry it's just another example of Gregg's lack of consideration for those that tried to support and help him.

For sure no one is blaming you, Jairus.

I have a friend that went through the same thing with his wife and it was really bad. So I really, really feel for the guy...if its true.

How many times have we seen this sort of thing in our lives? I for one many, many times. Consequently I won't purchase anything in advance. Too many things can and do go wrong. If its not an existing, ready to ship product, count me out.

I have no complaint with Gregg. Although I did not get my last issues, anyone with the amount of problems he had was plagued with more than just slot cars. The mags I received were excellent and all the content was more than worth the price. Everyone lost on the deal as far as getting their issues but I talked to him once and it seemed he tried his darndest to get them out.  Sometimes it pays to walk in a man's shoes to get an idea how his feet hurt.   :o  :to_take_umbrage:  :sorry:

Vay,

I have complete collections of those, and pretty much all the others.

The only thing missing is some of the newspapers published in the late 60s and 70s: Model Car Racing, Model Car Journal, Miniature Auto Racing, etc. There were also some more local newspaper type publications, like "Model Car Racing News" out of San Francisco, and have some of those, but not complete collections.

Interesting! The newspaper format for many specialty publications, e.g. Sporting News, Hockey News, Canadian Football News, Rolling Stone, Crawdaddy, Comics Buyer's Guide, Toy Shop, Monster Times, was popular well into the 21st century before circulation nosedived due to competition from the internet.

Nonetheless, I like all the ads and pictures of slot car emporiums in those old magazines.
