Capt. Rick does better with a rattle can than most (myself included) do with fancy airbrushes and compressors

Thanks Paul.
I really like the way those paint brush "pipes" look on the old GP cars. Hope you found some cheap ones to donate to the cause!
You know Pablo, I've got lots of goodies for air brushing besides the air brush itself....compressor, spray booth, lots of air brush paint bottles etc. I just dread using the thing because of the cleaning process. Sometimes I'm cleaning for 4 different colors on a body.
I decided to try just blowing in some flat red in this Ferrari and it was fast and easy. The flat solid colors cover really well:
Then I tried metallic silver and gloss yellow. The metallic and gloss colors seem to be much more transparent. They rely on a proper opaque back up color. I had to use quite a few light coats on the gloss yellow before I felt comfortable about backing the body with flat white. It turned out fine though:
The dark metallic grey on the Lotus 40 covered pretty well and I think the silver back up just enhanced the metallic effect.
Next up is a metallic blue for my Ford GT40....maybe with a gold back up. I'll be experimenting on some scrap plastic.
So far I a happy rattle canner!

May resort to old skool hand brushing the paint for the BRM period Korrect style !
Haven't got long or many junk bodies to practice with the airbrush...may even look at a single action brush, just can't get used to the dual one.

Paul, good paint practice items are the 2 liter soda (pop) bottles. They're made from a plastic similar to PETG which some slot car bodies are made from.
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

I've see some real nice paint jobs done with "rattle cans" over the years. I certainly won't give them any snide remarks. I started with a Binks single action airbrush with an M tip in 1969 or 70. Along the way, I ordered a new Paasche "VL" double action brush, but never used it. Before it arrived, I read about an Aztek which is easier to clean, has the adjustability to be used as a single action or a double action brush, & has screw on interchangeable tips.. I've been using them ever since. I'm still more comfortable with a single action brush, but I occasionally force myself to use them as a double action brush. My old Binks doesn't get much use these days, but it does spray the purple metalflake I mixed better than my other brushes due to its larger tip size.
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.
