That's a good guess Tony and all the bodies mentioned so far were popular choices among the Pro's in early '68.

 

But, check out this WILD Keith Tanaka CMRA winner from a bit earlier race than Mike's CMRA chassis:

That Lancer "Super Competition" King Cobra is a hint for you guys to think outside of the normal bodies the Pro's favored. :D

Rick, haven't you built a clone of Phil Rubins bat pan chassis, or was that on your "to-do" list? I saw Phil run once or twice, but by that time everyone had an anglewinder. :)

Keith Tanaka, wild man! Who would have thought (Maybe I just don't know.)?

 

Full plate chassis (almost), thingie body, and fixed "drop" arm, is this some kind of first for late 1967?

It looks like I did build one a LONG time ago Bill.....before I even had a digital camera. :shok:  I don't remember what happened to it. I might have sold it to my buddy Martin W.

Keith used one of Lancer's 3 1/8+ wide "Super Competition" King Cobra bodies that allowed him to drop the body down over the tires. Then he cut off the bottom portion of the body for a super slammed "thingie" look with an almost, kinda sorta semi-scale Lancer body.  :crazy:

 

Something I plan to do a with my build...........hint. :)

The CMRA? Rules that Keith ran that body in had no or much smaller tire dia rules then the USRA/Car Model rules. So it was really low!!!!

That body was kind of a hunk compared to the handling Lola's and lotus 40s.

The pictures of Mike's car seem to show a relatively large diameter front wheel with a very small diameter tire. I'm using a Russkit front wheel and a Riggen AA front tire.

 

Mike's rear wheel seems to be a full width wheel, .625" tire mounting surface with a .150" set screw hub. It also has large flanges and a large diameter set screw hub. The tires were likely light blue or grey.

 

I'm using a "mystery" rear wheel. possibly Weldon, that matches Mikes and black tires. I have very few light blue donuts and fewer still wide grey donuts that were used at the time. I have orange donuts but I believe they weren't used in early '68. I chose black donuts as they were available if only used by the "scale freaks". :)

Speaking of "scale freaks", I'm going to run wheel inserts like the concours cars of the period and because I like them. :crazy:

 

I'm using some wheels from a 1/32 scale Monogram 427 Cobra kit as wheel inserts. The stock wheel is on the left. A modified .500" diameter insert for the front wheels is in the center and a .390" diameter job for the rear wheels is on the right:

To keep the rear inserts from going to far inside the rear wheels and disappearing, I added a polystyrene spacer to them:

You are correct Rick I still have that chassis you made. I am not sure how long I have had it but it has taken on a deep gold patina (no piss fingers as you say) nice peace of work, proud to be its caretaker. Keep up the great work. "I like to watch"

Martin, you're a pretty good chassis builder in your own right. I still recall those ten or a dozen Team Russkit F1 chassis you once built & had online. I still have paper copies of one of those chassis filed away somewhere. :)

Thanks for that Bill, actually i did find the Team Russkit  F1 roller I saved for myself.

Can anyone link me to a race report or tell me what components i would need to finish the Thigpen/ Phil Rubin chassis it deserves to be shown and driven. 

Looking forward to spending more time completing some old projects that have been on the back burner for too long. You are all an inspiration.

I remember I had 2 bat pans like Phils just built for my self and one for Mike Tango. went to Nutley to test it and Mike said we needed to build anglewinders. I don't believe I even ran it. Could not even sell it, obsolete before it was run.

Hi Tony,

 

Anglewinders sure changed everything didn't they.

 

This last gasp inline is getting a body the Pros didn't seem to use but I've got one, it's something different, it's LOW and WIDE and it's, well, cool! It's a Lancer, not the common Dubro, Honker Can-Am. The scale "Lightweight" #5161 on the left and the "Super Competition" #961 low and wide version on the right:

The Super Competition body is 3 1/8" wide so I can run 3" wide track width tires up inside the body.

The Super Competition version (bottom) is also lower and with wheel openings that match the smaller tires run on Pro cars compared to the scale Lightweight version (top):

The standard weight scale version #161 Honker comes with a super detailed full depth interior shown on the left. The other versions come with the simple driver insert on the right:

I'm going to use the Dynamic Handling Body interior shown below along with a Russkit drivers head, model kit bashed motor injectors, aluminum roll bar and "honk'n" pipes and Patto's Place decals:

I'm going to, hopefully, use Testors purple metal flake paint backed with silver. I'm going to try the rattle can but I have the bottle paint for my airbrush if needed. The color is less "red" than shown in the picture:

Thanks Rick for finding that race report, so now I am looking for a Russkit Lola GT. Good luck, I have Dynamics and Lancers "low and wide" maybe that will have do?

I asked my wife about the purple on the Honker and she showed me an Amethyst stone she has in a piece of jewelry, and its a perfect match. It may be worth looking more, or a custom mix is worth doing to match the real car.
