The original is geared 12:31, that's a 2.58:1 ratio, a little longer than the recommended. 

 

The crown gear is a special Dynamic item too, since it's black anodized aluminum, except around the outer edge of the gear - very striking!

I believe that the arm with the slightly thicker wire is from the later version of the Dynamic/GE motor, called "GE MK IV Silver Hornet". These are far more scarce than the original motor that sold very well.





Looks the same but has that arm with less turns and thicker wire:



The armature was also sold separately, as well as every part of the motor.



Rick did his usual fabulous job on that Mirage, putting all of us to shame! 

Here is another Mirage, built by Terry Schmid in 1967 for the Rod & Custom racing series that effectively began "pro-racing". This one appeared on eBay about 15 years ago along with another Schmid Cooper-Maserati F1, the pair selling for $38.00!





Nowhere near the build quality of Rick's marvels, but they were not designed to to pretty, just to go fast and handle!

That rewound motor is scarce.  I've only seen one in five years of collecting them

Yep, I managed to score one of the rewinds in the box a few years ago, but that's the only one I've seen in 20 odd years of collecting! 

 

Had a couple of the standard ones burn out, so I wonder how the very hot rewind held up???!!! (but we shouldn't forget that these are 50 year old motors, and the warranty probably doesn't apply any more). 

 

Did the bodies on Terry's cars survive Philippe? Nice find in any case... guess I missed those!

Hi Don,
yes, the bodies survived for most of the dozen or so cars we have gathered over the years, built by Terry between 1966 and 1970.
He liked the Mirage a lot, but also the Russkit Lotus 40, Lola T70 and McLaren MK2. Here is a sample of some of his cars, I have not had the time to address their restoration yet.











While they were nicely built for the day (remember that Terry was, like most of these guys, a teen then), they cannot compare with the truly fantastic and artistic job by Rick, who should have been a jeweler working for Cartier or Carl Faberge!

Also regarding the GE motor, Dynamic issued this kit with the motor, that sold very well in the day, but that is tough to find intact and boxed nowadays.
