Any added gear whine from the idler?

Probably, but more like a mild groan rather than a whine.
If I can manage to post the video, you can listen for yourself. Stand by...

Ok, you intrigued me! Have I missed a post on your "giant donut mounting cone"? An area I struggle with in the vintage tire department still!
Also, please run vintage, no glue, it is so messy!

Wouldn't expect anything less from a Big Block Caddy!

Paul, I can get you as big a donut cone as you want for free on the beach after Independence Day or New Years.
A byproduct of fireworks celebrations. What size do you need ?

First run was without glue. Got a little wheel hop but after that it was fine (glue at end of straightaway was enough to take care of the rest of the runs after most cleaned off).
Runs super, sounds great, looks great and thanks to Pablo's big heart it belongs to me. Pablo is trying to get the video of some runs posted. I think he saw how bad I was at cutting the lights and figured I needed a lot more practice. LOL. After I get a little better I will post some times and MPH.
Thanks, Pablo!
Also, Dallas was smiling ear to ear when he launched the first run.

What's the voltage here? Is there a "standard" for drags?

SDRA rules say 16.0 to 16.2. Red probably knows what it was in the test.

Hi Pablo,
Goodness gracious great balls of fire. I don't think the guy who wound that arm ever thought about it running at 16V. Very cool video and car too...congrats!

Thanks John
It's all pretty simple in theory:
-hot motor revs much higher than a stock 36D, especially at 16 volts, therefore it needs different gearing
-biggest spur that still gives about 1/16" clearance with the approx. 1" OD wheels was a 43T
-final drive calculations using big wheels put me in the ballpark on pinion size
-mocked it up and it becomes obvious the only way to get the rear axle where I wanted it was an idler
There won't be any gear changing in this car, so I had to nail it first time.

Cool, Red, thanks for the report Don't beat yourself up too much on my account.
All I ever expected from the car was good, trouble-free performance and it seems to work fine

Red brought the (well tested and broken in) car to the races last Saturday to show it off, and allow me to check my work.
I felt like a proud father Just like he told me, zero damage, zero problems
I reckon I did "OK" for my first drag car build, but you be the judge.
Red brought a small notebook with all the times the car recorded, and said it was really consistent.
I can't comment on drag racing, but I was thrilled about trouble-free performance.
The "H" motor obviously was a home run, as usual

Has Red tried any gearing changes to see how they effect times & consistency? Or has he always run it with the same ratio as when it was built?
I intend to live forever! So far, so good.

No gear changes Bill. If you look at the gear train design I think you'll see it's not really possible. I'm not a serious drag racer so faster times are not a factor. Just working for consistent reaction times, MPH and ETs. Reaction time is the only thing not consistent. LOL
