Need a bit of help here.

At some time in the late 80s maybe 90s I found Slot car junction in SSF.  So I wanted to run my car from childhood again. In my new found wisdom I put on fresh tires new braid and fatter guide wire.

The car has been sitting on display for a few years now, but I wanted to get it back to original (69 spec) and to that end, rear tires go back to orange and original wire goes back on.

My question to anyone that can help there was a small connector on the top of the motor that I had soldered the wire to. Is that a part I adapted or????

Please take a look at the pics of the car prior to changing the wires, let me know what you think. Thank's.

Just to be clear, this is a better pic of the part I am trying to identify.

Can anybody give an opinion on the plus and minus of thin gauge wire, because this is super thin, and yet I won races on a commercial track with the car.  Go figure. :shok:

I'm not sure what your question is.

Are you asking if that is a factory rear bussbar?

My guess is no, but Rodney or Rick Thigpen can probably answer your question.

Are you using non-stranded lead wire?

That would be pretty unique.

I also have not seen a factory bussbar pointing up like that one.  Nice car, Martin.

Thanks Guys, to me It looks like I made a vertical tab, or found something that I sandwiched under the brush screw.

Here is a pic of a stock motor for comparison. The question is, is it a part I clipped from something or what???

I found some identical stranded wire from an old slot car controller that is connected down the middle like my original wire.

I went ahead and made a connector to replicate what I did in 69.

In the controller that I scavenged the wire from there was some copper part .010" thick. So I used it to make this part.

Sorry about the fuzzy pics. This is the part installed on a dummy motor. The hole is 1/8'' D. it is rolled over into a small tube on the end and is ready for the wire to be soldered in place.

Hard to get that motor more parallel.  Great job.

Thanks Mike,

I know full sidewinders were popular around this time. I never bought into the design. I wanted a motor I could change if needed without taking the motor apart.

I did file the corner of the rear magnet a little. I always ran smaller diameter tires than most. Hand me downs if they were in good shape.

A racing friend of mine, Dan O`Neil of Quincy, MA, was a guy who often thought outside the box. In the early 70s, he built a full sidewinder chassis for open class wing racing & choose to run a "B" can motor in it. You ought to see the carving he had to do on the rear magnet & endbell to fit the motor in the chassis. He took it to a monthly Blue King race in Coventry, CT where it fell on its face & became a shelf queen, never to be run again.

Bill here in England, full sidewinders were the hot ticket for a while from the end of 69, in both 1/24 (bottom left) & 1/32 scale.

Great shot Lee!

Before anglewinders, full sidewinders, most with 26Ds were briefly the winning ticket in the Midwest, and Pete Hagenbuch did a long article in Car Model on how to build one.

About 15 years ago, I found a full sidewinder at a London swap meet with a Cukras arm!

Nice find Don, looks to be all steel?

I will have to take a pic of a beautiful pro sidewinder repro I bought from Phillip Niyazi. Man he does such nice work.

But for now all I have on file are these early sidewinders. One of which I did restore.

Yep, all steel Martin.

I like your soldered sidewinders - I have a few like that too, but not so cleanly done!

Hey Nelson, I must be missing something? What double drive are you referring to?

Here is a clearer pic without the body distorting things.

We're good friends so I speak(and understand)
Nelson.

I'm 99% sure he's referring to this car.

I wanted to add the pics of the track that this car spent most of its time on. Near as I can find and remember Hounslow Raceway opened in July 68 and was all done by 70ish?

A great track where this car featured in these pages had its fair share of success.

While racing at Hounslow a celebrity walked in the doors. " That's Jack wild" somebody whispered.

Jack had recently moved to Hounslow and was now famous for his part in the feature movie Oliver.

My Dad said I painted one of his cars, I do not remember that, but O.K.
