"I have a proposal for a proxy race series of modest scope and ambition. I'll sketch it out here and if there's sufficient interest (minimum of 10 entries, maximum of 20) we can pin down all the fine details.

1950s sports cars in 1:24 with PETG bodies. Inline chassis made exclusively from brass rod and tube with a limit of two rods soldered together for their full length - exceptions: motor brackets and a small guide tongue made from any material - with Hawk 25 motors and 8:28spec gearing. Tall and narrow wheels with sponge tyres. Wheels to a minimum of 1" in diameter and .325" in width. Ground clearances the same as Retro - .015" front/ .050" rear.

Races, assuming the assent of the other host venues, would be at the four UKRRA championship rounds plus the Retrorama six hour enduro.
A fine selection of suitable bodies can be obtained from Bodies4Beer and I'm assured that other sources are also available. Aiming for realistic looking cars but not slavish copies of originals. Anyone expressing a firm intention to build a car will be assigned an entry number which will double as their car's race number."

- Sir Steve Kempson aka: Lowrider here.

Yes, we have another proxy to build for.
Lots of time for rules discussion and parts acquisition.

Most discussion is on Facebook at: https://www.facebook..._tab=discussion

But, if you are not in the social media, I'll forward any discussion.

Paul,
Steve Kempson has not been on Slotblog in years and can't seem to answer your correspondence.
Therefore, for you and anyone else "social media challenged" I humbly request you use his personal email address at: steveroonie@aol.com

Of course I will continue to connect this race to Slotblog as much as possible.
Including but not exclusive to, posting my build either here or in a special thread as well as social media.
Thank you very much.

I have zero knowledge of the Hawk 25 motor, but with 1.00" OD wheels the spec gearing 8/28 would be a FDR of 3.50.

That's extremely tall for an FK type motor, isn't it?

For comparison, FDR for a Hawk Retro motor with 8/28 gears and .820" OD wheels is 4.27

I am trying to talk Steve into reducing the diameter to 7/8" which is the normal 1966 Rod and Custom sports car rules.  And at that stage 8/28 is pretty realistic with the torque the Hawk 25 Retro motor puts out.

I have one ordered and plan to get the car built pretty quick so I can test, test, test.

I'd concur; that would be a move in the right direction, a FDR of 4.00

If asked my opinion, I'd say spec an 8T pinion and leave the crown to the builder.

As long as it doesn't protrude below the chassis.

Well, you have my vote!  Steve is back on Slotblog, so send him a message.

FYI, I plan to build a car asap and give it a lot of testing before I push the rule maker.  He might be right, you never know.

I retract my questioning of the gearing.

Steve says they have the torque to pull those gears and I believe him.

"Trust, but verify" :D

I should have known Steve had it under control. I'll go back to my vintage cave now....... :sun_bespectacled:

Very happy to say that I've joined up for my first Proxy event with these fine folks and Steve will be sending me my very own Scarab body with which to participate.

Luckily, I have some awesome inspiration...

Happy to have you join us Justin.
Just remember, building a proxy car is a bit like sending a rover to Mars.  You have to make it as easy to drive as possible.
Break downs can happen, but you need to engineer it best you can so bullet proof the machine and since you have a track... test, test, test.

The Facebook page kind of referenced 2018 as race time....?  Do we have about 6 months to get the cars done and sent to (?).....?

I painted a BRG Lotus 11 (Dubro butyrate) many years ago and it needs a chassis...........

Larry, be sure to let Steve Kempson know and he will assign you a number.  Or, you can pick a number not yet assigned to an entry.
A Lotus 11 is pretty small so build carefully.

Jairus, please let us know the weight of your test car and how it ran with the spec gears/wheels.

You show me yours and I'll show you mine :)  But mine isn't built yet

I've been showing on F.B. and now that the body is painted but not assembled, I'll start a build thread soon.
All testing will be reported as I am hoping to help those uninitiated and unfamiliar to proxy racing.

Hoping to take the car to the track this coming weekend.

With these cars though, too much grip might be a huge problem.  Finding the balance between traction and the ability to slide rather than roll over... will be more a result of tires than the chassis I think.

Edit: Assembled chassis weights in at .131 kg.

I've been pretty busy since the body for my Scarab arrives. I'm hoping my "looks good to me" approach pays off with a running car in the end. lol

.375 min. width rear, isn't it?

What happened to .250 min. front width?

That still isn't correct. Wheel width rules are:

Rears: .375" MAX width

Fronts: .250" MINIMUM width

Body from a 1/24 (not 1/25) Monogram kit, #2227. Model of a '57 C1 Airbox "Fuelie" C1 Corvette set up with '57 factory add ons:  283 cu. in. V-8 engine, Rochester mechanical fuel injection with factory “Airbox” cold-air intake system, Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed manual transmission, RPO 684 Heavy Duty Racing Suspension, independent front suspension with coil springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and hydraulic four-wheel finned drum brakes with Cerametallix linings, and 5.5 X 15" rims.

Looking back to the 1950's era motor sports and comparing safety features mandatory today, then: t-shirts, polo helmet, seat belts, sometimes. Amazing.
