Good things come to those who wait.  As I hinted at in an earlier post, the Altec 220 now is being rebuilt.  Braid was stripped last night.  Track half sanded, power taps removed and first Bondo repairs today.  Hope to finish sanding and remove bridge section tomorrow, route during the week, and paint by next weekend.  Well, ya gotta have a plan.  All volunteer under Ralph as our chief -- many hands make light work.  Now if I can just talk them into getting the old billiard counter out of storage!  Stay tuned.

Last night (Friday) final sanding and cleaning.  This morning fresh epoxy paint - 4 guys, 25 minutes.  Braid actually was here but the company sent the wrong braid, so correct braid is ordered.  Lane striping and new power taps will happen this week.

Some rather sharp criticism of the raceway was posted here previously. With this current refurb. many of the gripes should be resolved. Big Ups to all the volunteers helping to restore the Altec 220'. :good:

And it's a challenging track, because except for the big bank, it's totally flat.  I have great memories of that track because in 1990 it was on this track that I did my first slot car race since 1973.

Do cars launch very often in that high bank?

However the Nuvolari is now in a land fill somewhere. But those 6 inch radius 180 degree corners were a trip. RIP Tazio.

Cheers

Not as challenging as the Nuvolari

While the turns look to be a larger radius than the Nuvolari they also look to be a constant radius which would provide a challenge.

I missed racing on this track when it was in the Keystone USRA in the mid 90's.

My first race back into the hobby was on that track in 1990 with the Keystone USRA.  But I was out of it by 93 when they added more classes and made the races into two-day events.

Blair's pics don't do that bank justice -- standing inside of it was awesome.  I would say 50 degree or more.  We ran vintage cars on this track last spring -- Cox, Manta Rays, etc. and nothing launched.  LMP's stick like glue and also go around those flat turns really well.

Looks much like the track at Monaco in Atlanta Ga back in the late 60s. I loved that track.

Sure would like to put some laps on this one some day.

What is the planned race program when  the track goes live? Group F and LMP only?

Thanks to all the folks at Retro East last week who had encouraging words about our Altec rebuild.  As of last night (Saturday 9/2) all lanes striped, all sections numbered, and four lanes braided to the bridge.  We need to braid all lanes under the bridge and up to it before we can drop it back in place.  At least one more lane should be braided today, and next weekend should finish off the braid.  Then fine tuning, and we should be ready for our first LMP race on 9/30.  When you think of it, a rebuild in five volunteer weekends is pretty awesome.

Almost there!  Track is running, needs some tuning and tweaking.  Brian and I ran test laps tonight, mostly to clean the lanes and braid with some beater cars, but couldn't resist getting out the better cars near the end. With track still needing final cleaning and no glue yet our LMP's were within .3 seconds of times on the old surface.  Also ran my retro Can-Am.  Still in set-up from last Retro East race, so had to tip-toe a little; used Kelly Euro's on no-glue track, got down to 7.35.  I'm guessing a good .5 seconds will come off with glue.

The track is a blast to drive.  Smooth, with room to relax between corners, yet challenging with all the flat turns.  First LMP race is scheduled for Sept. 30.  After that, think of stopping by and giving it a try.

Hi guys,

I stopped in with my son kipton (we both have red hair) on Saturday to check out the race. I picked up an lmp setup and have been coming up almost everyday, the tracks are really nice!

Is it cool if I stop up to the races and ask some dumb questions again this Saturday?
