As far as the pancake motor design, of course you have to take a look at the classic Aurora Thunderjet!

I came across it again. There is a picture of a rolling chassis, that is making the rounds of the 'net, recently, that has 2 angled motors.
I'm not sure if I spotted it on FB or Pinterest.

As an update:
I switched to ARP angle pinions for both SS and LS prototypes.
It lowered the gear noise, BUT, in a dozen laps or so, both crown gears wore out significantly!
Interesting that this occurred, because running the straight cut brass pinion - though noisy - both prototypes ran well over a 5 minute run, with no indication of wear.
The cars currently have a Hypoid gear setup, and neither pinion or crown gear are designed for Hypoid use.
Do they make slot car gears for hypoid use?
The crown gears that wore out, were Cox and Mid America Crown gear.
So, I need to see how I will retrofit the gear planes to be Non--Hypoid.
Thanks for looking!

With regard to your gear mesh see post #3 in this topic.
Reversing the gear will give more gear contact than the straight pinion and much more contact than the angled put on in the normal direction.

Hi Eddie,
Your suggestion had already been in my plan, prior to you mentioning it.
I had installed the angle pinion backwards, but I could not get a smooth mesh, which left me baffled.
So, I put the pinion on in the correct direction.
I've changed the gear axis to be non-hypoid and will be testing the cars to see if this will make a difference.
I presume it will - testing will tell!
Thanks again for the suggestion Eddie - I appreciate the support!

Slot.it makes crown gears for a 0.5mm offset for their 1/32nd scale offset inline motor mount system.
