Reading through this race report I thought it would be fun to build my own version of one of these cool F1 cars (click on the pic to enlarge):

There is even a motor how-to article in this issue by the late great John Cukras which I'll be following:

I made some high resolution (600 dpi) scans of the cars in MCS.

The winning car of Doug Henline:

MCS 3-69 Henline GP pg 2a.jpg

The runner up John Anderson's car:

MCS 3-69 Anderson GP pg 2b.jpg

Mike Steube's third and Mike Morrissey's fourth place cars:

MCS 3-69 Henline GP pg 3a.jpg

Terry Schmid's fifth place finisher and the concours winner of Don Amedo. I like that the concours cars had to be in the top 20 qualifiers to be judged. No "motorized models" allowed:

The cooper body Mike Morrissey ran looked really cool. Unfortunately it never came out to my knowledge.

I hope if you do Henlines car you don’t reproduce the body.lol.

Hi Tony,

I've never seen the Russkit Cooper either.

I guess there weren't many (if any) points awarded toward the overall L.A. Championship given for the concours event. Doug certainly didn't put much of his race winning effort into the Lancer Lotus 49 body. :laugh2:  But John Anderson's second place Dynamic Ferrari looks nice and so does Morrissey's Cooper.

Anywho, just so that fat body Lancer Lotus doesn't get a bad wrap.....I built an anglewinder version with one that kinda, sorta looks like a car:

Thanks Steve. I have to admit it's one that catches my eye every time I walk by it.

I love building up these old motors. They are usually the first thing I work on when I start a new project. So I read the "Cukras on Motors" article in the above newsletter a couple of times and made a sketch to cut up the can and end bell:

My old mill is a Clausing and it's about 1/2 the overall size of a standard Bridgeport mill:

Clausing (2).JPG

Here it is in action cutting the back of the can. I didn't remove as much material as John shows in his not yet repainted can:

A-Can Build 2.JPG

Cutting the slot in the front of the can:

A-Can Build 3.JPG

Cutting a matching slot in the end bell:

Mura endbell build (5).JPG

Lastly adding the holes. I plunged an endmill to finish the holes. It makes a super clean and round cut:

I don't want to imply that a milling machine is necessary to make these modifications. I'd bet back in the day it was almost always done with a Dremel tool and a file. I'm a retired machinist and I actually enjoy using my little old mill so I use it when I can............it's fun!   :D

Here's the modified can compared to a stock one:

And the opened up back:

Thanks Bill. I think that's what interested me in machining. My best friend took up the trade and was making nice looking things while I was struggling with files, saws and a lack of talent to use them skillfully.

Magnet time.

Versitec magnets, Mura .015" semi-can shim (packaged by Dynamic) and Certus .030" top and bottom magnet shims:

A-Can Build 7.JPG

I used JB Weld to epoxy the whole mess together being careful not to glue the semi-can shim to the motor can just yet (I took this picture of the parts before I cut up the can):

A-Can Build 8.JPG

The Certus top and bottom shims are great for getting the magnets centered in the can:

A-Can Build 9.JPG

After an hour in the toaster oven at 150 - 200 degrees.............

A-Can Build 10.JPG

........a final ZAP:

A-Can Build 10b.JPG

Time to get a new bearing and some paint on the can.

Rick,
Awesome work, as always.

Question on the history.

I seem to remember that Tony P referred to anglewinder F1 cars as short-lived.

I assume they didn't go back to inlines.

So did F1 racing die out on the Pro level, or am I mistaken about the short-lived comment I thought I remember Tony making?

Hi Mike,

Tony would know for sure but what I've seen in the period publications is a couple of 1969 AW F1 races and then.........nothing for the F1 cars.

I should add that I've seen some "fantasy F1" open wheel style cars raced infrequently in the early 70's. PdL even published his version.

I built this Aguirre GP style car copied from a picture of a car and a signed chassis from the Oakland Speedway collection:

On the east coast we ran one anglewinder F1 race and then they banned them until the next year and went back to inlines. The anglewinder F1s ran like ****. Launched chattered and basically didn’t handle well. By the time we could run them again the class along with stockcars was dead and it was all CanAm.

The can gets a new Mura "big" bearing:

A-Can Build 11.JPG

Aligned and soldered in place:

A-Can Build 8a.JPG

The can is finished with a coat of VHT black wrinkle paint:

A-Can Build 14.JPG

I love this stuff. It's so easy to apply. Now worries about the dreaded "orange peel" finish. Just blow on a light coat, wait a minute, follow up with a full coverage coat, stick it in a toaster oven at 200 degrees for an hour and like magic:

A-Can Build 13.JPG

This reminds me of comments made to me by 2 very respected Pro racers about a motor I was building:

You are not going to paint it black? smile.gif

Black! Black is meaner looking.

Sure enough I changed the color of the can to black and ever since then:

"I love the look of black wrinkle paint on a motor. It looks like............VICTORY!"

Martin, not sure that cooper was ever sold. I never saw one on the east coast. I believe it was suppose to be released but Russkit was pretty much finished at that time.
