Yes, it gets hot. Not red... but too hot to touch at the flaired end if left on for an hour or more. In just 5 months the rubber texture ring started turning dark brown because of the excessive heat. This has made me decided to use the 80watt Weller or Ungar for general use, saving the 100watt for thicker brass tongues and the like.

yeppers except for the real thick stuff,.062,im using my old UNGAR 45 watt,it handles everything else and never gets handle hot,and ive had it since the 90's when i raced USRA and changed motors every heat,,,,lol,,,,thanx J,,
oh and keep up the great work and photos of your work,youve inspired alot of us old guys to begin trying to build again,,,,,
