I am definitely out of my comfort zone with this one.       Building the chassis was easier for me.

Rick just to make it as difficult as possible you should place all the plug wires in the correct firing order.

I used to use a hot pin to make the holes, and wire from a door bell ringer for the wiring and fuel lines,etc.

I used a special performance firing order Eddie......1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.   

 

Mark, I used specialty aftermarket parts, a sensitive feed drill chuck and a milling machine. That's why I'm so darn slow with my builds.

I flipped up the lid on my "trash can spray booth" and finally got the Honker in paint.

 

I paint my vintage butyrate bodies with Testors enamel (never any lacquer) and preferably using a rattle can. 

 

This time while using the rattle can I had to quickly blow some paint into my airbrush bottle to finish spraying the body. The rattle can just wasn't getting up into the rear spoiler. The airbrush did but now I had to clean the thing.  

 

The color Testors offers that's closest to the Honker's color is Flake Purple Metallic and I'm backing that with Chrome Gloss:

 

 

The body ready to go all masked off with my favorite Teflon tape. It's transparency, when holding the body up to the light, helps to see how the paint is covering:

 

 

I had to take the picture outside in the sunlight to get the real color. Everything I tried indoors made the picture turn out with either a dark purple or reddish purple tint:

 

 

It's obviously not an exact match but it's definitely in the "spirit" of the original color and most importantly, I really like it:

Painting slot cars isn't a exact science like brain surgery. Who's to say that it wasn't that colour when it was first painted?

I've got to say Mark, I'm struggling painting Mario and the rest of the interior...........

 

 

.............and it sure feels like it's as hard as brain surgery!

Race cars did get fresh paint jobs occasionally. Now they just get a new "wrap".

Everything is detail painted as best I could. My "shaky paint brushes" were especially active this time leading to lots of back and forth touchups...........but it's done:

Most often I have a new project in mind that I'm excited to get to before my current project is even finished. This excitement about the new project spurs me on to finish up the one I'm working on.

 

This time I've been stumped on a new project and the poor Honker has just been siting idle for a month waiting to be finished.      Time to finish it up and maybe then a new project will come to mind.

 

The roller is finished up with Champion lead wires and JET flag:

A brace was added so I can solder the motor in place if it (hopefully) runs well after track testing:

That engine detail is stupendous!!! Including the auxiliary venturis in the Webers is far beyond slot car level. That is model contest stuff.

Exactly. It harkens back to when slot racing was model car bodies on cobbled up chassis. This is my favorite of all your builds. Scale body on well built chassis.

Thanks. This Honker is a favorite of mine too.

 

I became really interested in the first 6 releases of Lancer's beautiful 1968 Super Competition low and wide handling bodies. I have built them all as period correct Pro style cars.

 

They are circled in red in the Lancer ad below:

 

 

Then I began wondering what the same 6 bodies in Lancer's scale lightweight version (circled in blue) would be like. They are taller and narrower than their handling body cousins and I'm really liking them too.

 

This Honker is the second I've built from the list of 6 with the King Cobra being the first..........4 more to go.

Love the way you're mixing it up with these, building to scale but also incorporating pro chassis concepts - i'd kill to be part of any club that ran cars like this.

Will you be doing something similar for the other 4 in the series ?

Simon, I have the Lancer scale McLaren M6 body and I've started building the Matich that I got from my friend Rodney. Unfortunately that project is on hold while I deal with a flareup of lower back pain.  

 

I'm still on the lookout for the scale Lancer lightweight Ferrari P4 and Chaparral 2G.
