I am starting a 1/24 Cox Ferrari 158 for a customer... and have started with the wheels.

 

While the Cox cars all had wonderful cast magnesium wheels, most had rather slab like looking (too thick) outer rims, and I was looking to improve on that, so that they look a touch more like the real 1964 158 wheels which did have nice thin bead detail.

Below is the  stock Cox Ferrari wheel, really very nice, but the outer rim is much too thick...



And I wanted something more like this...



So... into the lathe ,a little cutting, and a bit of paint, and this is the result... (original in the centre)

The colour does look a bit washed out, but is does look closer to the wheels above



Still tons to go....

I very much like what you've done with the Cox wheels. 

 

It's great that you are sharing your build process here on Slotblog. Your expert tips and techniques will be much appreciated.

Hey Chris, Martin (from SF) here again. I did a couple of Cox 158's some time ago and totally missed the fact that the rim lips were raw ally.

Your build may inspire me to go back and lathe that detail on my wheels, center hub also mag color noted.

Just finished this,......it took a while as most of the bits I had were far from pristine and did require some work.

I always struggle with how far to take these restorations/builds of vintage cars, and on this one I added some intake trumpets (never liked the stock "clear" intake covers), and I cut a couple of bits of styrene to extend the front upper rocker arms (in stock form the wheels look like they are not really attached to the car).
I am still buggering around with mesh covers for the intakes,....so far I have not been happy with what I have done.

The car was built to represent the car Bandini drove at Spa 1964,.....everyone seems to do Surtees

I know you like details Chris, did you ever notice the pic of Lorenzo Bandini at Spa 64 (post 7) has the nose side vents as inny's

(not outy's).

It also has the 2 small vent holes on top and in front of the windshield.

If you look at the pic I sent (post 4) of the Cox static kit it has these details and the slot car does not. I wonder what prompted Cox to change those details?

Hello Martin,.....the pic. of Bandinis' car (Spa 64) in post #7 does in fact have "outy" nose vents, as does the Cox version, ...the Cox version does not however have the 2 small vents in front of the windscreen,.......Ferrari changed the details of the 158 at nearly every race, so depending on what pictures/races you are looking at the details changes would anyones' perception of the models accuracy.

Just to muddy the waters,.........Surtees in the 158 at the Mexican GP 1964,............no nose vents !!

 

 

And at the 1964 German GP,...........heavily sculpted "inny" nose vents,..........

 

 

I am sure Cox/Monogram/Atlas etc. all had the same issues in deciding which race to copy for their 158 models

Hi Martin,......as the 60's GP cars had their water radiators in the nose, the footbox of the cars did become quite "warm",..... these were "cooling" holes to help with that.
