Can't help you there Joe.
I mostly have catalogs up to 67-68 and they're not using the basic 26D yet, just the 601 as their stock motor. Thought I had some more recent Champion price lists, but haven't found them yet.

Probably not of much added help, but here's what I have.
The Ferrari F1 has a 2 hole can with a 601 sticker.
The other car has a 2 hole silver can without a label that could be a Champion.
It has a balanced arm and what I assume are Arco 33 mags with a shim.
I don't know enough about it on whether this is a labeless 607 or a homemade, hopped up motor.
As far a one hole can, if it followed the same pattern as Champion 36D's, they would of possibly been 603's or 605's. Just a guess.

Mike - Assuming the balanced motor you show is a Champion then it is a 607. They had the ARCO mags and were wound and balanced. The main difference between the 607 and the premium 617 was the can which was made with a much thicker metal and a far superior forming process. The off-end had 4 large cooling vents with the metal forming a "web" around the bearing. And of course the can only had one hole with the opposite side being solid. Don't remember but the wind may have been stronger too and I think I remember the cans were not the same size, the 617 being very slightly larger than the 601 and 607's.

I think Mr. Lone Wolf is looking for the slightly later "generic" stock Champion 26Ds with a chrome can and one or two cooling holes. Pretty much the same as used by Riggen I believe. Seen a lot of those in the later Champion cars, but don't know if they ever had a specific name or stock number.

Thanks everyone, yes Don is correct, just your basic Champ motor. Not the ones with the cooling holes in the can. I think the 601 was just basic Mabuchi motor that Mabuchi sold in those little black cardboard boxes. Champion probably just reboxed them to be sold as a "Champion" motor. The basic blue wire 26D. This lot came with a "602" plastic box on a card and a couple single hole motors but everything was loose so I wanted to verify.
I guess they had to come up with new **** once a week to keep interest up.

Champion changed all the time - we don't even have a real list of the cars they issued later in the day because they must have put together what was available on the day!
Never heard of a 602. Only the 601, 603, 607 and 617. Could you show us a photo of that 602 label - maybe it has a clue!

Thanks Joe. That 602 card is fantastic. If it follows the logic of the 702, I think that means it's just balanced, or just rewound, something like that. The 601 was already a "selected" motor, with the others used for rewinds.

Yes, probably selected by ear ![]()
This one sounds "pretty strong" boss, Okay, put er' in a box and send it out. ![]()

Looks like Champion actually had a molded plastic insert in the box instead of the typical sponge to hold the motor in place. ![]()

For Champion 26D lovers.
Top are single hole, bottom are two hole.
No reference to the can on the 26D card.
If someone is interested I would sell this all as one lot. All motors run but everything shows age.
I'm pretty sure the top row are 607's and the bottom row and the one in the chassis are 601's. No 617's.
The box header says "For National Championship 12" so it would be a 607 can (Japanese) wound to G12 specs at the time, probably with ARCOs

Don,
I'm pretty sure the Group 12 26Ds were just stock motors; the equivalent of the unbalanced 16Ds that were the Group 12 spec at the time.
In 1974, West Seattle Speedway let me enter a Group 12 race with a Pittcan-powered sidewinder I had built - and I won (there are only 4 entries, but still). The regular Group 12 cars handled better, but mine was faster... so Group 12 motors were not that fast at the time. Nothing like the later X12 for instance.

We were able to hold two vintage races in Atlanta and both were won by 607's. Just wiped them off and put them in what ever chassis I could find.
I was amazed by how fast they ran and how cool they stayed. Having great friends and racers like Eddie Fleming and Dave Hinely race the cars didn't hurt either !

Don - you're right, I was thinking of the X-12's but they were in the 80's - much, much later than the late 60's when the 26D's were introduced.
